Why won't the U.S. sell an F16 fighters to Nigeria, rather than the simple looking Super Tucano?

Answered April 28, 2018

The Super Tucano is probably the plane Nigeria needs to fill gaps in its capabilities.

For one, the Super Tucano probably fits Nigeria’s economics better. A base version can cost as little as 10 million USD, whereas the current iteration of the F-16 costs on the order of 10 times as much. Perhaps more importantly, the Super Tucano is much cheaper to operate and maintain, has lower training requirements, and has more modest infrastructure needs. The Super Tucano can operate from rural dirt airstrips if need be.

Second, the Super Tucano is probably better suited for ferreting out insurgents who don’t have anti-air capabilities. It can stay on station much longer than an F-16 and fly slower and lower, so it can better search for and engage these types of combatants. It has also been shown as very effective against drug smugglers who tend to use light aircraft.

The Super Tucano isn’t going to help Nigeria against another professional military, but it certainly can help to deal with domestic threats including terrorist and criminal organizations.
