Remote Jobs: Pros And Cons. by Apus: 9:59am On May 05, 2021
Technology is fast changing the ways we do things, including our jobs and businesses. There is no doubt that in the nearest future most jobs will be done remotely as evidenced more recently by the way most businesses carried out their operations during the heat of Covid19 pandemic.
The loss of jobs, high unemployment rate, rising food prices, inflation amongst other economic woes have led most Nigerians especially the youths to look inward towards harnessing digital skills for self sufficiency and solving various problems/needs.
It is not uncommon therefore to see, 3 out of 10 Nigerian youth engaged in one form of legitimate jobs done remotely. This comes with much flexibility and a feeling of being in charge. As good as it sounds, working from home may be fraught with some challenges as well.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. Stereotype (Being Thought A Fraudster):
Nigeria is still at best a developing nation. This means a larger percentage of its people are yet to grasp the full possibilities of what technology can do even though we claim to be advanced and carry big phones. Your remote job will require you spending most of the day at home. Of course, this wouldn't go unnoticed especially by nosy neighbours. Some may be bold enough to ask while others may not.Once they are not able to ascertain for sure what you do, you are called all kinds of names like being lazy or a fraudster.

2. Having to explain what it is you do over and over:
This is even the hardest part. Friends, families, neighbours all want to know what you do. It's not as though it's bad for them to ask but most would find it hard to believe you especially those of the older generation.

3. Your time is not respected:
Everyone sees you as the available guy and therefore would always like to encroach on your time. Imagine your name tops the list whenever a volunteer is needed either at your church or community for a project to be carried out say on a Monday morning without even consulting you cause after all he is at home.

Other challenges include epileptic power supply, working into the night(for those who deal with people/organizations from other time zones), watching your weight.

In all, nothing beats the flexibility and a sense of feeling in control remote jobs offer.
