If a woman is divorced, she’s not supposed to bear her ex-husband’s name anymore. A woman get’s her ex-husband’s name because he’s married to him. When they’re no longer married, she’s supposed to drop the name. Legally, a woman is a Mrs only when she’s married. If she’s not married anymore, it is not legal to bear Mrs. The children can still bear the man’s name because they’re his children. Any woman that wants to continue bearing her ex-husband’s name shouldn’t have divorced him in the first place.

Your ex probably had no investment on the name hence the reason she let go at your request as she honestly has no obligation under the law to do so. Take Mo Abudu for example, her ex even sued her at a point to stop using his name but she won in court. The name was hers to keep as she had been known with the name....imagine her changing to Mo Whatever now just because the husband says so...will he buy her brand identity, goodwill, age, popularity, etc back?

If she has no real attachment to it na to leave the name jejely jare. As for me, if I ever find myself divorced from my husband, we have kids together and I have no plans to remarry, I will probably hold on to the name. Why will I be Wura Adediwura when my kid is Ifeolua Adedayo? We sha remain Adedayo together biko.

You are right

Makes no sense at all. Names should be changed after a divorce. That way the lady would be totally 'single'.

You can simply be addressed as madam.
Once a Mrs, cannot be a Miss.

If children are involved, I think she can keep the name if she wishes to.
This is wrong sir. She can't keep the name once she leaves the man. The name belongs to the new woman coming into his life. Children or no children Mrs can always revert to Miss or better still Ms which is neither Mrs or Miss

Point of reference: Fathia Balogun is now Fathia Williams

It's illegal. You could be used for Jactitation of marriage.

Best thing is to not change your name officially after marriage. Cos it's too complicated to change it back after a divorce, and change it again if remarried. You can answer Mrs (his name) socially, but leave all your official documents going forward in your maiden name.
Re: Do Women Still Bear Their Husbands' Names After A Divorce? by Tzar(m): 8:17am On May 08, 2021
Like iI said if the man doesn’t mind and you feel keeping the name benefits you, there is no law that restricts you... if the name isn’t copyrighted by the man. In Mo’s case, she created a brand from her marital name. That brand is registered legally, that is why she won. The ‘brand name’ won not Mo. I am talking in terms of social context not commercial context. It is a proper thing to do after a divorce.
if you acquired the name by legal marriage, why should you keep it when that legal union gets dissolved? If you have any financial claim in the marriage, you can seek legal means to acquire that claim. Retaining your marital name is of no effect in future benefits from a dissolved marriage.
A woman who has a name worth volumes will not struggle to keep somone else’s.

People want to bear a name for whatever reasons.
Perhaps she wants the same name as her children, perhaps she wants all the professionsl qualifications and documents she has to be in the same name etc.
She can legally change from Mrs Seniorwriter to Mz Seniorwriter.
It can be a nightmare at times with names.
I think abroad, they're still allowed to keep their marital names even or simply revert to their maiden nsmes

@the emboldened; instead of thinking find out.

Yes, they are allowed to legally keep their name after a divorce abroad.
Infact, it is seen as a legal right, unless you don't want to

The condition that made it legally her name ( marriage to me) no longer exists.

Well it was a short marriage (6yrs) been divorced for another 6yrs.

Retaining my name can mislead the public. Unscrupulous people can also use the retained marital name in ways the owner of the name by birth do not want.

Imagine if the ex spouse becomes a IndecentStar, a murderer or a terrorist? The maiden name is saved and the marital name becomes soiled.
Everyone should answer their papa name after a divorce. There is nothing misogynistic about that. I don’t think Dangote or Otedola’s daughters will struggle to keep a martial name in the event of a divorce.

There is nothing wrong in letting kids understand the concept of divorce. Relationships shouldn’t be by force. Even God wont force you into a relationship with HIM.

9jaRealist:

It’s HER PERSONAL CHOICE...

You couldn’t have compelled her to...
Once taken, it legally becomes HER NAME.

PS: If you have kids, why wouldn’t you want to share the same surname?
It’s egoistic (or simply misogynistic) to think it’s all about you. But likely you had a relatively short marriage.

I do not think the title means much, though the use of Mrs gives the impression of marriage, which is not true if you are divorced. If you use Mrs it will be assumed by some that your husband is Mr maiden name, is all.

Here is an explanation in detail.

Hello
For a married woman who never changed to her husbands Name, would she still be Ms or Mrs?
I find it weird being called Mrs...... (fathers name. )

2. When filling forms do I say Married or single since I am still using my fathers name?

cheesy Old enough to know that, ideally when you divorce you should revert to your maiden name. What are you keeping the man's name for? Especially if it was a nasty divorce, abi person no get name before im marry?

I'm also old enough to know that, realistically you may need to keep your married name on certain documents for official purposes, where reverting to your maiden name may create new challenges for you.

Budatuum, how old are you?

Old enough to know that some may not know what I might know and to therefore be kind and respectful.

You will be whichever you choose to be, either Mrs or Ms Father's Name, the choice is entirely your's. People will not know however so you may find you must inform or correct them on the right way to address you, and you might need to tell story about how you are not married to your father and how your husband who's name you don't share is not your bit on the side.

Using your father's name does not unmarry you so the correct thing to write on a form is the truth since the untruth would make you seem untrustworthy once you are found out
