Please mods, move this up. I need advice
Hello. Nairalanders. I don't know if this is the right platform to get advice. I got admission into a university in the south south region. Initially I had the inspiration to study Biochemistry. But I was disgraced in school after heads of the school said I don't know what to do.... They urged me to go for Medicine and surgery . They usually say I have the capacity. I never had any mentor after my aunt passed away. Then I found a love for nursing science (my mom said I should do this cause it's not lengthier and because if it's professionalism), bioengineering (it's scarce to find universities that offer this. There are though!)
One of my uncle added a Basic Medical Science course instead of the Nursing ooo because I didn't choose my uni on time and time was not on my side. I got admitted and checked that my departmental cut off was way above nursing which I would have been chosen. So now I'm stuck with Physiology and not nursing. CAN I TRANSFER TO NURSING DEPARTMENT OR BIOCHEMISTRY AT SOME POINT OR WHAT SHOULD I DO
My direct uncle don't seem to care about my schooling but their own children. I've damned them because I can't bow down to any man (I've tried to treat them good but to know avail). My other relative uncles have access to a scholarship at PAMO but they didn't include my name but added their sons for Medicine and surgery which I scored higher than them cry

My mother is trying her best but a single mom. I don't have anyone in this life. Given up hope.... Maybe in God but he still keeps me alive. They always say it's gonna get better. School is resuming and don't have anything to start with. Anyway, I've been thinking about this situation but now I feel glad when I hear Biochemistry, longing to study medicine (cause I feel it's a superior course) and want to engage in Bioengineering as my second bachelor or major. I don't know what to do?? Help me out on what to study....

Go for nursing like your mum said. Faster and a professional course. When you start working, you can do medicine if the passion is there.

More better option, do nursing, work for two years in Nigeria and travel to UK under work visa (by getting nursing job in UK and moving). You can do conversion to medicine over there.

My own personal suggestion. Do personal reflection and decide on yourself the best option to take.

You don't sound passionate enough about medicine. before you lose interest in 2nd year, I advise you stick with what you already have.

The conversion is little complicated. I don't have deeper knowledge on it, but on the lay man level, it means taking some courses (commonly called topping) to qualify for degree certificate. It is common in UK and US. Don't know if same is obtainable in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

It works this way. You did nursing in school of nursing in Nigeria. Later you relocated to UK and wishes to acquire Bachelor of nursing degree (B.Sc nursing) to improve your earning power (Owo or kudi) in UK as well as career growth.

Over there in UK, B.sc nursing degree is a 3 years course. Since you already had, nursing certificate from Nigeria, you can be able to transfer majority of the courses you took while in Nigeria to the UK school which reduces the number of years you are supposed to spend in the school to one year.
That is, you will graduate after one year in UK university rather than the mandatory 3 years you are supposed to spend.

For US own, it is similar though common for switching from nursing to medical doctor profession. Rather than the mandatory 5 years to spend in order to become a medical doctor, you could end up spending around 2 - 3 years (I think). The beauty of the whole thing is you go at your pace while still working in your field.

In Nigeria, it is similar to HND to Bsc direct entry.
Summary of the whole point is that, medical doctor profession is not easy and most people do burn out before completing the program. Nursing is not too difficult, but it is easier to enter and complete the program without burning out (except if the person has not worked in service industry or hate the service industry.... service industry like waiter, bar man, support assistant in financial industry, secretary, even as a carer of elderly family members in Nigeria when sick or couldn't walk without help etc).

Conversion from Nursing degree certificate obtain from school of nursing in Nigeria to B.sc degree certificate is faster and easier in UK than USA.
Conversion from Nursing profession to Medical profession is faster in USA than in the UK.
Salary is higher in USA than in the UK for both profession while it is easier to migrate from Nigeria to UK as a nurse practitioner than to USA within same time frame.

Sorry for the long epistle of John of Jersey grin

Bro, I be naija na. I no dey those two countries wey I mention. There is no need to drop contact since I am not even in those two profession. Just sharing the little knowledge I have regarding to them.

The same way it is not possible to do Msc and PhD using HND certificate in Nigeria is same way you cannot use school of nursing certificate for academic progression in those two countries.

NB: If you did your nursing program in the university in Nigeria, there is no need for the conversion in UK. Just use the certificate to apply for Msc in nursing if you wish. (if the person graduated with poor result is another thing altogether).
