The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has said it is not interested in the so-called Government of National Unity,GNU, being planned by the PDP-led federal government, saying it is satisfied with its role as the leader of opposition and a government-in-waiting.

In a statement issued in Abuja,Wednesday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said this clarification should dispel the rumours that the ACN has been contacted and that it is
in negotiations for a share of ministerial appointments.

”Our stand against the so-called Government of National Unity is that it stifles democracy by compromising virile opposition which is a key ingredient of a vibrant democracy, thereby encouraging the emergence of
a one-party state.

It also stunts development and promotes complacency. We hope this clarification will silence those who have been peddling the lies that our party sold out to the PDP during the presidential election,” it said.

The party warned that any member of the ACN who is interested in the GNU should first quit the party, and also reminded state chairmen of the party to guard their utterances and clear with the national executive committee
before commenting on issues such as the GNU.

”No member, at any level of the party, should trade with our name. State Chairmen should comment only on issues within their areas of authority and stop committing the party on issues that are only within the purview of the National Executive committee of the Party.

”We know that this is the ripe season for ‘food is ready’ politicians, who are ready to sell their birth right, if necessary, to join any government in power.

But as we have always said, we are not willing to compromise our ideals just because we want to share in the spoils of office.

”If we did not compromise when we have just one state, why should we do so now that we have grown to six states, with the possibility of growing further when we challenge in court those who stole our mandates? Therefore, any
member who wishes to work with a PDP government should get out of our party today,” it said.

ACN said the era of the party’s executives paying ‘courtesy’ visits to governments of the ruling party in their states is long gone, and that member, no matter how highly placed, who tries to trade with the name of the ACN would be sanctioned accordingly.

Meanwhile, the party has said that the state chairman of the ACN in Akwa Ibom, Aniekan Akpan, stands suspended from the party and can, therefore, no longer speak for the party.

Nice one ACN. Why should we always make stupi.d moves like a "government of National unity" If Nigeria has no opposition, then, what is the point of democracy

‘ACN’ll not turn down ministerial offer from Jonathan' Written by Sam Nwaoko, Ado-Ekiti

Wednesday, 04 May 2011

THE chairman of Ekiti State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Chief Olajide Awe, has said the party will not turn down President Goodluck Jona-than if he calls for ministerial nominees from the party for the new Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The Ekiti ACN boss said any such request from the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would be considered in the spirit of government of national unity.

Chief Awe also advised the presidential candidate of the party at the last general election, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, not to defect to Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), following his defeat in the presidential election, especially in the South-West.

Addressing newsmen during a “thank you” rally held in Ado-Ekiti, on Monday, Chief Awe said President Jonathan had endeared himself into the hearts of all Nigerians, by giving Professor Attahiru Jega and his team in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the wherewithal to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

“I know the leadership of ACN cannot fraternise with the PDP because the party is devilish.

“But the personality of President Jonathan is different. He is humble, humane and trustworthy, having allowed INEC to conduct free and fair elections.

“So, our party may decide to appoint ministerial nominees to serve in his government if the president requests for it,” he said.

He, however, said those who would be considered for appointments would not suffer a fate similar to that of the late Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, who was murdered while serving as minister and, at the same time, leader of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) which was in control of the South-West.

The Glory Has Long Departed from The Nigerian Tribune, Says Lagos ACN ]
Written by Joe Igbokwe
Monday, 31 January 2011 19:23

The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria has described the Nigerian Tribune as a relic of everything that has gone seriously wrong with the legacy left behind by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and said the paper, by its present loss of focus, is bringing shame to the revered name of the late sage.

The party said it is reacting to the flurry of tendentious and fictitious reporting the paper has indulged in in recent
times in a desperate effort to instigate crisis in Action Congress of Nigeria and urges the paper to live beyond its present pecuniary interests to appear in good lights to reactionary forces that now pick its wages.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Joe Igbokwe, the party said that it is unfortunate that The Tribune has thrown decorum and respect to the winds by the unending strings of fictitious stories and hatchet editorials it has been inventing lately to ingratiate itself to the PDP both at the federal and regional levels. It advises The Tribune to learn from past mistakes some papers who sacrificed principle on the altars of expediency committed and retrace its mercenary ways.

It is a known fact that The Tribune was founded by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on the ideals of progressivism and that while he was alive, the paper did its best to remain committed to these progressive ideals. It is unfortunate to know that since Chief Awolowo's death, a progressive degeneration has hit his legacies and the hallmark of that degeneration is the present putrid philosophy of the paper that fully promotes the dirty interests of buccaneers and irreverent as represented by the desperate politics of the PDP today. It is a great pity that The Tribune is today a propaganda organ for reactionary forces that worked against the interests and ideals of the founder. We know that The Tribune's present desperate disposition that has made it a wet rag for the PDP is founded on the knowledge that it does not make much from sales these days because of its retrogressive philosophy.

We are not surprised at the present position of The Tribune as it aligns with the pecuniary interests the paper has been promoting in recent times. We are not surprised that The Tribune is showing its anger at losing the clientele of the ousted PDP governors who stole their ways to power and who have cornered the paper as their mouthpiece against the people of the South West. We are not surprised that The Tribune is going out of its ways to cook false stories and fictions with the purpose of creating confusion in the ACN.

We want our teeming supporters to note that The Tribune's present dance of shame started during the June 12 debacle when the paper worked frenetically against the interests of progressive Nigerians who were demanding for the restoration of the mandate of Chief M.K.O Abiola. We want them to know that The Tribune has never departed from being the mouthpiece of the PDP in its twelve horrendous violation of Nigeria and for this yeoman's job, the paper has curried so much illicit patronage but has lost the moral right to pretend to represent the voices of Nigerians. We want Nigerians to see The Tribune as another cash-and-carry organ of the present misrule of the PDP and treat its tendentious stories as such.

We want to let the teeming supporters of the ACN to know that the stories The Tribune are dishing out about ACN presently are entirely false and do not reflect what is going on in our party and are merely regurgitated wishes of the PDP in its desperate wish to hold on to power by all means. We want Nigerians to know that The Tribune is one with the PDP in its effort to retains power for the purpose of robbing and dehumanizing Nigerians. We want to let Nigerians know that The Tribune at present is ruled by inordinate hunger for illicit patronage from the PDP both at the center and in the South West. We want to let South Westerners know that the glory has departed from The Tribune as it no longer cares about good name but what comes to it from the PDP font of illicit resources and for this, it is ready to do any dirty job. We want all to treat Tribune's recent hatchet jobs on the ACN as the desperate effort of a paper that is deficient in morality and principle to please its beneficiaries and we are sure these dirty jobs will fail, just as the PDP failed in twelve years to use power to better the lives of Nigerians.

Joe Igbokwe.

They are not going to partner with the same crooked and corrupt party they are trying to get rid of. What part of that you do not understand?

Like I continue to tell folks, "the ACN has gained serious knowledge from how things transpired in the past" . Everything we have seen is deliberate and strategic. The ACN is very aware of what has being achieved by the SW region and the effort it has taken . They are now unlikely to accept any 'Carrot' that will actually serve to compromise the interest of the SW in future. OBJ 419ned the region . Yar Adua , once comfortable , did same too with how he sanctioned that Oni be rigged in "at all cost so that the PDP remains in control in the SW" during the 2009 Ekiti court-ordered guber rerun.  Tinubu sweated blood to get the SW to where the region is today. He is right not to trust anyone and correct to want self-determination not dependent on the Government of the day. Now that the ACN controls the SW, the focus is on consolidation and performance that will mean that there is no way back for the PDP in future.

We all know that Ministers act , regarding important issues, with the approval of the President . That much will be obvious to a smart guy like Tinubu who has "seen it all" . A Minister can propose policies that is beneficial to the SW but those policies will never see the light of day if GEJ and his 'inner circle' are not supportive . It is politics 101 i.e 'buy' the ACN's silence with a few positions that really does not translates into much since it is the government , and not Tinubu, who control Ministers !!! . Asiwaju simply does not want anyone to make a fool of him or the SW region anymore . Better to stay in opposition and let your work speak for you . The SW unanimously voted for the ACN because of Fashola and Oshiomhole and it is very logical to assume Nigeria , in 4 years time , will follow suit if the ACN governors perform. Simple logic no one can argue with .

hey, people are really stupid o! Someone takes 30% of ur revenue bacause he named himself 'asiwaju', and all u do is pray for him? BTW, if ACN thinks they can get more states, then they should think again, if they paraded akume, iyorchia ayu, audu ogbeh, onoja, waku, akaagerger, and could not get benue, then they should think again. In other states, they also paraded people like turaki, udoedehe, boni haruna, sekibo, ararume, udenwa & all other failed ex-PDP politicians an yet they made no impact. In anambra, dora lost with a margin of 400, if she was a PDP candidate, she would have beaten ngige hands down. Very well said.

The fact is, as a major opposition party, you have no morale authority to criticize the ruling party for their crooked and corrupt ways if you are part of the problem.

Like you said, this is common sense and smart politics. You can no sell the same thing thing to Nigerians, you have to differentiate yourself by establishing that contrast for all to see.

I really like this, no more business as usual. This is smart and credible politics by smart and thoughtful political players, their stance tells you that they are not a fly by political party, they are in it for the long haul.
