First of, what EUropean country are you going?
If it is Ukraine and it likes, then I will advise you finish your schooling here in Nigeria and plan towards writing the international exams needed to practice in Europe, America or anywhere you wish to go to after your MBBS.

But if it is the UK, or a country where you can stay after graduation, then it is best to leave immediately.

Goodluck with your decision.

SR, you should know better to advise him properly.
I know doctors who migrated to the UK immediately after their housejob. This guy in question is 4-5 years from the completion of house job.
If he goes to Eastern Europe, he will still need to return to Nigeria after 5 years study to do MDCN exams before he can do housemanship. More so, many of those Eastern European trained doctors aren't that knowledgeable.
Omo, SR no too try for that advice oo. He should know better. I know so many foreign doctors whe fail mdcn exam some years ago because they used my centre for the exam. Naija medical school is good oo, tech might be poor but then ...

Hello Daxier, I'm in a similar situation as the OP, except that I'm not traveling until I conclude my undergraduate programme. I'll like to commend you input. It's enlightening.

However, I do have specific, puzzling questions I would like to enquire about regarding this whole process.

I would like you not to mind reaching me on WhatsApp. Thanks in anticipation.

Eastern Europe countries I assume you referring to Ukraine, Belarus or countries nearby. Dude you better off finishing in Nigeria and it’s easier to practice finishing frm naija than those Eastern Europe countries because your credentials will not Be in English. If you want to relocate to places like Canada or other central, Northern Europe I would suggest u leave but eastern countries ain’t worth it

Thank you very much for your answer sir

The cost is pretty much settled and by the grace of God that wont be an issue
The only thing hindering me is the fact that I'll have to waste the 3 years spent here
So I want to be sure its was worth it
I met a consultant here in my school that advised me against it, telling me doctors are better paid and treated here in nigeria than the countries people go to.

But from your answer you say it's easier for medical doctors that studied abroad to secure jobs abroad
So it's significantly harder for doctors that studied in Nigeria to secure jobs abroad?

thank you very much for your response
I think you can start off from where you stop in Nigeria. Collect your transcript of studies and other relevant results. I don't think you will lose any years of your previous studies. Good luck.

Dear doctors in the house, I'm a third year medical student in a nigerian university, I got an offer to study medicine in eastern Europe, will it be wise to accept to offer and start over again or should I complete my studies here.
My major reason for accepting the offer is the fact that I'm scared that I wont be able to practice (or it would be very difficult) to practice in the country of my choice, because I heard nigerian certificates arent held with high regards compared to others from European countries
I just want to know if it's possible to practice somewhere else after completing my studies here with a nigerian degree

Congrats bro.

I am moving to my 5th year in medical school.
The choice is yours. To me, no strikes as academic activity is smooth over there.

If I may ask, how did you apply for the
scholarship?
Thanks

Eastern Europe?

Which country?

There are other funny stories from that area. Alot of Nigerians study medicine in Ukraine and still come back home

If with your Nigerian MBBS cert., you can practice in UK and in US, I doubt if there's anywhere you can't practice

The country will likely be Ukraine and you can’t even practice in the country because doctors in that country are not well paid.

Furthermore, there is a saying that was flying round the media then that says “be wary of Ukraine doctors” seems there is a question mark on doctors trained in that part of the world.

To conclude, from my personal experience. It’s usually people that are unable to get admission to study medicine in a Nigerian university that go to Ukraine. I know more than five cases. And its also cheaper to study medicine in Ukraine than a private school in Nigerian.

Exactly. You are very correct.

Whoever told you the Nigerian Medical certificate is useless is either ignorant or intentionally deceiving you. Top choices for doctors to practice remain US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany. Both Nigerian and Eastern European graduates will write same licensing exams to practice in those places. I should add that many Eastern european graduates come back to write the MDCN exams and do housemanship/Internship (at least, even if they'll japa eventually). Not sure exactly why it's difficult to stay back and practice over there.

For those telling you the Naija certificate is highly valuable and that Naija docs are highly sought-after, I'll say that's not entirely true. On the international scene, It's about how well you perform in their licensing exams and the other stuffs on your application (such as research, observerships etc). What I can tell you is that there is a level of toughness that the Nigerian system baptize you with that enables you to survive and push through (sometimes even, to excel) in those saner climes.

This is getting too long (Sorry!). If you do have specific concerns, I'll be happy to chat more.

You don't necessary need to start afresh. Some countries and schools will accept you between Year and Year 3 as a transfer student but they need to review your transcript first and decide based on your courses and grades. Some schools will also accept you at Year 4 but this is rare. You must show very high grades for them to do this.
