It is often said that Nigeria has gone to the dogs. That’s no longer true. Now, even the dogs have lost the country to the swine. If the country reeks now, it is because it is the age of the swine, and the country is turning into a big piggery….

I will tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a man named Clifford Orji. He was said to be a ‘mad man’ (By the way, how come the mad man told the police his ‘correct’ name?). But no one told Nigerians then that he was a metaphor for their country. (As a talented young Nigerian poet, Lola Shoneyin, would croon, “Now you know”!)

Orji was reportedly ensconced somewhere in Lagos, pretending to be a mad man and capturing unsuspecting people, killing them and selling off their choice parts to some interested buyers. When the story broke and the man was arrested, it was, as usual, big news in the papers. It was ‘rumoured’ in the papers later that Clifford Orji was only an agent of some ‘big men’ who needed human parts for rituals and other purposes. As usual, the ‘big men’ were never mentioned. In Nigeria no one mentions a big man’s name – except another ‘big man’.

What do you call a situation when a mad man is refered to as a sane man?

I think the above has resonance with the fact that mad people as well as disabled and other afflicted people are a common sight in our communities. The sight of naked Mad Men/Women is common in our cities.

The Guardian published stories about The Orji's including the fact that his brother Charles was also mad. Clifford was brought back to find a cure for his mental condition by fellow villagers living in Mafoluku only for him to "escape" back to Lagos after a few years eating Lizards off the wall and bringing home dead fowls found on the streets for dinner.

Clifford Orji once has sex with a dead woman killed by a hit-and-run driver in broad daylight at Toyota Bus stop very close to The Guardian premises.

Weekend Concord also had an interview with him around 1992 while he was prowling the Beesam-Concord-International Axis at the height of his madness naked with an erect phallus and he also proposed to the lady journalist saying "I sabi am well well".

Please, try to read the series of reports written by the Guardian during the time he was arrested with Tahiru Aliyu around February 1999.

They were later arraigned on charge number D/61/99 for the alleged murder of one Madam Awawu Lawal on February 3.

The police charge read: "That you Clifford Orji and Tahiru Aliyu on the third night of February, 1999 at about 1.30 a.m. by the Toyota Bus-stop, fly-over, along Oshodi-Airport Road, Ikeja, Lagos, in the Lagos magisterial district did kill one Awawu Lawal and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the criminal code cap. 31 volume II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 1973."

The police prosecutor also applied for the court's permission to transfer the suspected cannibals to a psychiatric hospital to ascertain whether they are sane.

The killing may or may not be true but there are lots of dead bodies killed by road users during accidents at the Toyota Bus Stop and the fact that he once had sex with a dead body around the area in broad daylight confirms his deranged obsession and he may probably bring the corpses to his tent for feeding only because when he was taken to Makinde Police station immediately after the arrest, he was caught eating some of the decomposing human parts brought in as evidence and the selling of body parts is probably merely a myth that is popular in our deeply superstitious country afterall some otherwise sane people started "mining" the area for the Money and Motorcycles that was claimed to have been hidden there.

The Madness of the Orji's is real and you can do further research on the topic.

Clifford Orji is still in Prison.

Clifford Orji & Tahiru - Two suspected Nigerian cannibals were arrested under a bridge in Lagos after residents heard the cries of a woman one of them he was about to kill. Remains of roasted human parts were recovered in their shack under under a bridge in Lagos. "Some of the limbs and feet on the man's grill are believed to be those of a young woman, going by the size of the feet and the long black permed hair," the Guardian newspaper reported, "The rest of the body ,  was said to have been eaten up before the arrest." The bizarre incident sent shockwaves through Lagos, causing a massive traffic jam as thousands of spectators massed around the area to catch a glimpse of the cannibal hut.

The suspects were identified as Clifford Orji and Tahiru. The cannibal duo, who appear to be mildly retarded, allegedly dug holes on the ground for unwary passers-by to fall into, before killing them and roasting their bodies. They allegedly preferred attacking women, especially "young, fine girls with long hairs,  We wanted to stop women from wearing wigs."

Orji, who is the more vocal of the duo, claimed to have come "from America." He confessed that they enjoyed raping their victims before munching on their flesh. Orji said he usually went out to hunt for their victims, while Tahiru acted as the butcher.

The demented killer added: " I just look unto the forehead of any woman, blow the air from my mouth as directed by the spirit, then, the woman will follow me. When I get to the underbridge, I will have sexual affair with her to a state of unconsciousness before we slaughter her and roast. I am not alone, I have between four to 10 people. They take their own parts and go while I wait again for another meat." It is unclear how many victims the serial cannibal-couple killed and ate. Neighbors said the two killers lived under the brigde of the Airport Road for years and were suspected of murdering people to sell their body parts for rituals.

Lagos - A Lagos court ordered that a man accused of murdering several women and then eating them must undergo new psychiatric tests, newspaper reports said on Friday.

The Ikeja High Court on Thursday ordered new tests to be carried out on Clifford Orji, detained since February 1999 after being found living under a Lagos fly-over surrounded by decomposing, and partly chewed through, body parts.

Orji, known to the Lagos press as Clifford the cannibal, was charged with the murder of Awawu Lawal and "misconduct with regard to her corpse".

Other offences were to be taken into consideration.

A first series of psychiatric tests undertaken at the time of his arrest found that Orji was mentally unbalanced but prosecutors have disputed the findings.

At his one appearance in court, Orji admitted killing Lawal and others and then cannibalising them, telling the judge "I eat human flesh like I eat potatoes."
