HON. ABAYOMI SHEBA ESQ. URGES NASS ON EQUITY, FAIRNESS IN ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL.

Equity is the hallmark of justice and fairness in any given society, where some are not treated better than others. However, where there is no equity and fairness then, the country will be on the part of anarchy, chaos, and instability.

It’s one thing for leaders to say they are concerned about issues that bother us as citizens especially in areas of justice and equity. it's another for them to do something about it and to let people know what they are doing. Whatever way we look at it, it is our responsibility as leaders to take action towards addressing issues that concerns the people.

If an opinion poll is taken across Nigeria to find out the effect of governance on its people. You would likely find out that most people in the country have not seen or do not know if their leaders have made any public commitments to address issues that concern them with justice, equity and fairness.

If leaders think that it’s inappropriate to discuss issues especially those that concern national unity and national identity, then perhaps they should think again because citizens of this great country Nigeria believes that it is important for us to come together and engage one another in this difficult conversations around issues affecting our unity as a nation.

Imagine Nigeria as a business entity; with the rate of issues arising on a daily basis, employees of such company would likely quit their jobs especially when the company can not prioritize or address issues affecting them.

As Nigerians, we need to appreciate the critical importance and role that our tribe, religions, diversity and equity play in nation building and the leaders at different level of government should know power is transient and the people is actually the power.

The National Assembly should remember they are representing the people and should put the interest of Nigerians first in the passing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. And also reduced the depressingly dirty outing for campaign financing in our elections. With the current economy crisis in Nigeria, increasing presidential campaign from 1 billion naira to 15 billion naira is not in the interest of the common man. The 200 percent increased for candidates who wants to run for any political position in 2023 is not a good development.

It is in appreciating and understanding what keeps us apart that we can value how important we are to one another.
