Nigeria Police - Graceful Or Disgraceful

Hello, kindly post the most ridiculous or glorious experience you have had with the police

I have a bunch that will crack you guys up. An example is a policeman reading my vehicle insurance document (wait for this) upside down? What will you say about? Let me give you guys the mic; I will pick it up soon.

Have fun.

Definitely disgraceful. I actually saw a television programe where an AIG was being interviewed and a lady rang in to say that she was disappointed at the way some police men ran away from the environs of a robbery when they ought to have helped out. The AIG then said that it was expected afterall their uniform is not bullet proof!

This happened at Ketu around 8.30pm sometime ago. Policemen stopped a car along the double carriage way and were checking the car's documents. The car parked along the road while all these were going on. There was also another car coming  towards the parked car and did not see the parked car on time, as soon as the on-coming car saw the parked car, it swerved to the outer lane to avoid a collision, just as he swerved, he ran into another car that was also approaching. Immediately this happened, in spite of the fact that these policemen caused the accident, they ran into their car and sped off.

YOU guys stop all this police nonsense, I am sick and tired of hearing all this police blah blah blah, If you want the damn police to be effective, why don't you go and lobby to the senators and the presidency or the police affairs department to provide this poor innocent people with the right equipment to tackle crime. We have computers and radio to track criminal in USA, Nigeria the police are still using file and paper. How do you expect them to tackle crime when they are given flash light with no battery. I can go on and on. How many helicopter does the Nigerian police has? 3 and two is defective, the only operative one is for the IGP. this poor people are paid 9000 Naira monthly and you expect them to die for what?

This other story happened two months ago at King Goerge V Road, in front of ECOWAS Office in Lagos. About five people were walking along the road, on the pavement, among them a mobile policeman. All of a sudden, one guy just slipped (as if his leg slipped off the pavement) and fell at the road side. Instead of the fallen guy to stand up, he just lied flat and his body started jerking. Incidentally, the mobile policeman was right beside him when he slumped. The first person to run was the mobile policeman, he ran as if he was been pursued. Even as he was running, he was looking back again. Meanwhile, there was a Police Station just a few metres away, one would have thought he would go into the Station and seek for help, he didnt do that, prefering to run away instead.

Dont think we are happy about that state of The Nigeria Police. We aint at all but this shouldnt stop us from sharing our individual experiences with the men in black uniform. We have heard weird stories of how these guys have murdered innocent poeple and stole their money. The stories of how Tafa Balogun stole the money meant for the development of the Police Force is still fresh in our memories. That of Ehindero is just unfolding. As it is today, no one would pray for his/her relative to join the Nigeria Police Force. Their appearance, their places of work and their barracks are so disgusting and that is putting it mildly. It is not that Nigerian can not afford to make their work and environment exciting.

We share information with the hope that these info would get to the people who would use them meaningfully someday.

mamajama, is ur dad a policeman? well, we are sorry about that. truth be told, they are not well paid or watever but the fact remains that integrity does not have anything to do with money. no matter how low an upright man's pay is, he ill never falter. there are some of them who still have that self-respect and u wont but treat them wityh utmost respect.
wat will u say about this then:
a policewoman wanted to get into a bus but was told that someone was already laying claims as a "staff" in that bus. she looked and the "co-staff" signified by raising his hand. she didnt enter but had to wait for another one. now tell me, if he looses her job today, will she be walking or begging the bus drivers?
we see them everyday at oshodi behaving in a manner more derogatory than wat u will expect from area boys.
i have more stories but il be dropping them later.
cheers

The only functioning helicopter is used by the IGP. Does he personally respond to emergency calls? Why are u telling us this? why dont u tell him directly as u have made us know that u are on one on one with the immediate past one.

If only the IGP's and other big goons in police will just be accoountable. some of whom u vigorously support

Yes my dad is a police officer, and I still have family member that are proud to be a police officers in Nigeria.  why do you guys thrive on talking about the negativity aspect of the force. just because their are some bad elements in the force does not wearrant us to condemn this people.  What about the brave police officers like RIBADU. OYAKILOMEN, WALI KANO and i can go on and on.  why are you not looking for good things that the police has done in the past?  angel101   it amazes me how you all over the forum and when it comes to some issues or topic, its better just not to speak as a novice.  The issue with Nigerian police force is not efficiency, What do you expect when their are no funds for training? has anyone of you guys been to police colleges and see what this guys are going through?

A Sergent in the ARMY is making more than an ASP in Nigerian police. what does the army boys do so well that they are over paid? has Nigerian ever been to any war front beside BIAFRA?  the legislation is so messed up and yet and all this pessimistic idea will yield no result.   Ad for the record Ehindero never stole and was never in any scam, he is too smart of a man to involved his character with a mess like that.  it was all media propaganda.

so what is the police in Nigerian doing that the custom boys or immigration boys not doing at the boarder? do you know what scrutiny we go though every time we come through the airport? if you want to blame Nigerian police force of lack of character, blame the police service commision who is responsible for staffing, training ,admin promotion and housing. This is an apparatus of the presidency

here is their link

Re: Your Experiences With The Nigerian Police by tboy1(m): 4:44pm On Jul 17, 2007
@ Mamajama

Then blame it on the police service commision and stop telling us all this rubbish. The person that posted this topic said we should share our ridiculous or glorious experience we've had with the police. Pls if you had any glorious experience pls can you post it. I know most of the problems with the corrupt policemen is the very ridulous salary they are getting but r u telling me that even if they provide better salary and good weapon for the police guys, that some of these police guys will act better(e.g not collecting bribe and not running when they see an armed robbers)

Is it not the same police that shot and killed a teenager (18 years old)who was sent by his parents to buy fuel in a car and just a week before this incident this same policemen from the same police division shot and killed a man who protested against the arrest of his son who went to ease himself at a nearby bush. The DPO claimed the boy was an armed robber. After investigations, it was found that the boy had actually gone to the bush because they do not have a toilet at home. But the unfortunate man had already lost his life.

So Mr Mamajama, pls you either post your most ridiculous or your glorious experience you have had with the police.

The police in Edo State have rescued 62 young people who were being allegedly trafficked to the Western part of the country.

The Police Commissioner, Edo State Command, Mr. Bala Hassan, who briefed journalists on the matter on Monday in Benin, also said the police raided the hideouts of campus cults around the University of Benin and arrested 10 suspected cultists.

Hassan added that the 62 people — 37 males and 24 females, were packed in a container and were being transported by a trailer to Sagamu when the police intercepted them at the Ekiadolor checkpoint.

He said the people, who were mainly infants and teenagers, were taken from their respective homes at Ukele, Yala in Cross River State.

Mamajama,

Sorry, there is nothing good about the police in Naija. Police is your friend, Police is your friend, they keep saying. Is it not these same policemen that took #11,000.00 from me, cos I couldnt find my #2,300 electric stove reciept. They took me to that smelling Surulere police station, and if I was not careful they would have easyly harmed me.

No good comes from them lot
Re: Your Experiences With The Nigerian Police by tboy1(m): 5:15pm On Jul 17, 2007
On 7 February 2001, a plain clothes policeman, Corporal Rabiu Bello attached to Kaduna State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) requested a young apprentice, Haliru Slau Agaba to buy a stick of cigarette for him.Haliru responded that he could not afford it.Corporal Bello "pulled out a pistol and pumped bullets into the young apprentice, who slumped" (The News, Lagos, 30.04.01).

Three policemen from the Central Kogi State Police Command. The party; Benhamin Oyakhire, Jimo Michael and Gershon Soba mounted an illegal road block, robbed some traders (an equivalent) of 100,000 US dollars, and set two of the traders ablaze in a brazen attempt to cover their tracks (PANA Press, 03.04.01).

On 27 March, 2001, a combined team of mobile policemen and military officers, stormed a second-hand auto-market in Lagos, shot four traders and took their money. When contacted, the Deputy Police Commissioner, all Mr. Emmanuel said he that was not aware of the incident (Vanguard Daily, Lagos 28.03.01)

Mr. Kalu Samuel Iroh was arrested with four others for an alleged traffic offence. The five were detained at Makoko Police Station but were later transferred to Barracks Police Station, Surulere where Kalu was "allegedly battered to death by policemen attached to the station.Kalu's death marked another instance of police brutality and extra-judicial killing of innocent Nigerians". (P.M. News, Lagoss, 05.04.01).

A woman, Mrs. Iroh, roasting plantain (a local delicacy of the poor) by the roadside was killed by the bullets from the gun of a policeman. The police merely described the incident as an accidental discharge, and nothing whatsoever was done to contact the family of Mrs. Iroh, no apology was rendered, and no compensation was contemplated.

Adewale Ayube is a local popular musician. He was shot in the leg on 8 April, 2001, while returning to his house after a night gig.Four men of the dreaded mobile police jumped on him and demanded to be 'settled' - a local parlance for a bribe. Ayuba gave them some money but the four policemen were unsatisfied.Ayuba refused to add anymore and was consequently shot in the leg (Guardian, Lagos, 09.04.01).

Do you want more?

There are two side of the story, was the stove bought legitimately? true there are bad elements within the police, but not all police officers are bad as been portrayed.

can you imagine, asking for receipt of electric stove, they only did that because they know you wont have it.

@ Mamajama

Pls i'm still waiting for your own glorious experience you have had with the police.
Re: Your Experiences With The Nigerian Police by monkeyleg: 5:32pm On Jul 17, 2007
Mamajama, I bought that stove legitimately @ Palms shopping complex in VI. I had the receipt somewhere, but could not find it at the time. I offered to call the people are home to look for it for me, and I was warned that if I did they would deal with me. we all know what that means. This stupid notorious stop and search order they have in certain parts of Lagos, is just license for those idiots to carry out daylight robbery.

The police are wicked, and there is nothing you are going to tell me about them that will change my mind. It has very little to do with the salary they pay them. While this was happening to me they were busy beating someone else, cos he refused to follow them to the station, FOR WHAT? He knew it would be a case of suspectyed armed robber if he got there. They beat him and threatened to shoot him in the presence of the public. In my opinion they should scrap the stupid police force, cos I do not know what they are doing

And just to show u how much of a novice U are, Oyakhilome actually left the service in the midst of a big controversy (and thats putting it mildly)

What is my business with police service commission? Did u read the topic of this thread? Dont get all emotional on me ok face the facts at hand. The police force is a big apology! angel101 royal princes of information, why does the president has one helicopter and all the state governors are driving cars?  DUh.  who has to respond to all the activity facing the operation and administration of the police over the country?  do you even know what the office of the IGP and his staff does?  Let me brief you. the system is disfunctional and not one man can change the epidemic that is facing the police force.  People are only talking of the police because we see and deal with them on daily basis.  Couple governors are accused of embezzling money, do you think they are alone?  if you traced how the money was laundered down to the root you will implicate more than 100 people. the country has no law and that is what is killing us. please stop talking about police jare.  When are are in mufti are they not like you and I?

and stop getting mis information from all this press, ask me i can give you valid information, the 21 Million scam was never found at the gate.  the money was never in the IGP office as been insinuated by the media.  Only 900 thousand was intercepted at the gate and on further investigation the huge load was uncovered in CP budget office. that is another story.
