The Commonwealth has placed Nigeria on its watchlist over the suspension of Twitter, a microblogging platform.

The body is monitoring repression of the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, media gag and disregard for the rule of law.

The Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, said all member countries have obligations to uphold freedom of expression as one of the core values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter.

“This underscores a commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other relevant human rights covenants and international instruments”, Scotland noted.

Her comments followed the June 5, 2021, appeal by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urging the Commonwealth to hold the Nigerian government to account.

Scotland’s letter to SERAP was signed by Roger Koranteng, Officer in Charge, Governance and Peace Directorate.

“The Commonwealth Secretary-General has been following the developments in Nigeria very closely and she is engaging the relevant stakeholders”, it read in part.

“Please be assured that the Secretariat will remain engaged with the authorities in Nigeria and encourage a speedy resolution of this matter.”

The Nigerian government, on June 4, 2021, ordered all internet service providers to suspend access to Twitter.

The directive was sequel to the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet, which according to Twitter violated the rules.

The Federal Government also threatened to prosecute citizens and broadcast stations who continue to tweet.

Apc really messed up Nigeria .. the painful act is that they used poverty to turn many Nigerians to crook, criminals , and scammers..

In today Nigeria... yahoo fraud rituals and scams is seen as norm .. unlike 8years ago..When all was done in secret.. with many having job and feeding fine.

Apc government brought down kyari ... once a super cop .. Apc turned to him to criminal.

Famine is close .. and won’t be surprised if they successfully introduce cannibalism to Nigerians ..

With Apc all negativity is possible.

A few months back when Britain's health minister, Hancock was discovered to have violated covid protocols. This video wasn't found out until after a month but immediately it was released and the citizens began to call for his head... He uploaded a video on Twitter resigning his post as Health Minister.

I just don't know why it's hard for the black man to practice simple democracy... Look at Mugabe,Musiveni,Zuma, this lifeless being at aso rock

We are just cursed and I'm longing to know why God made it this way for the black man. This cop whatever ought to have resigned his post immediately this claim came up but no, he's still "super-cop"

Even to comment for foreign groups on FB,you can't help but be called foolish names like "Nigerian Prince" cos of shits like this

I owe my kids that dual citizenship and I'm gonna do everything possible to give it to them

Freedom of speech, freedom of speech. Try questioning ANYTHING about the Holocaust or promoting communism and see if these countries won't throw you into jail. Canceling Buhari's post and banning Trump was also a violation of freedom of speech.
