He died with great dreams – Kelechi

Kelechi, Obilonu’s widow
Kelechi, Obilonu’s widow
One of such grief-stricken women is Kelechi, wife of Sergeant Loveday Obilionu, attached to the Imo State Police Command.

The deceased, who hailed from Okwu Uratha, in the Owerri North Local Government Area, was killed on June 18, 2021.

It was learnt that Obilionu, who was riding with a friend, was cornered by armed men in military uniform and shot.

The gunmen later made away with the vehicle after dumping their bodies in a drain.

Kelechi said she bid her husband goodbye on that day, unaware that danger lurked around the corner.

It, however, took a call answered by a total stranger through her husband’s phone, to change the course of her life forever.

Now left to navigate through life with three little girls, Kelechi said she is at her wits end and confused.

The widow said identifying her husband’s body in a drain was the darkest moment of her life.

She recounted, “My husband called earlier to inform me that he had a job posting but that it didn’t work out. He decided to go out with a friend and promised to be back on time. He called by 6pm and that was the last time I heard from him. When it got late, I became restless and called his phone till the next day.

“Around 9pm, a stranger picked to say that the owner of the phone was killed behind the Imo State University back gate by Okwuruata. When I got there, I saw that his head had been shattered by bullets.”

Since the sad occurrence, kelechi said life had become meaningless.

Presently, the widow grapples to pay her children’s school fees.

Kelechi said her children had been asking after their father and she was forced to tell them he was killed.

Fidgeting with her fingers, she said, “My daughters cried that day but I don’t know if they understood the reality on ground.”

When our correspondent asked the first daughter, nine-year-old Kamsiyochukwu, if she knew the whereabouts of her father, she answered naively, “He is dead. My mother told me they killed him with a gun. I miss him so much.”

With tears welling up again in Kelechi’s eyes, she reached out to the little girl and rocked her gently.

PUNCH Investigations learnt that the late policeman had premonition of his death and was apprehensive each time he set out for work.

Kelechi’s only regret was that her husband didn’t actualise his dream to travel abroad, adding, “Gone with him are his plans to give the family a better future.”

Widowed six months after wedding

Ngozi, Otu’s widow
Ngozi, Otu’s widow
The air around Ngozi suggested that all was not well. Her heart was so heavy that she could not find appropriate words to convey her feelings.

The 30-year-old became a widow six months after tying the knot with Chinedu Otu, an Inspector attached to the Awomama Divisional Police Headquarters in the Oru East Local Government Area of the state.

He was among those killed when the police facility was attacked on Monday, May 31, during the sit-at-home order issued by the leadership of IPOB.

Looking crestfallen, Ngozi said Chinedu’s death left a scar in her heart.

The widow said he resumed night duty on that fateful day and called her after signing in.

Unaware that not long after the call, an attack was carried out on the police division, Ngozi said she became worried when he did not return home by 10pm.

“I was worried and unsettled when I didn’t see him. It was unlike him to come home late. People around knew he had been killed but didn’t tell me. Later in the day, a policeman came and said the divisional police officer wanted to see me at the station.

“When I got there, I became uncomfortable and told a female police officer to show me where to ease myself. I was directed to a corner, but when I saw blood trails, I followed it to the back of the station, where I saw bullet holes everywhere.

“The amount of blood there reminded me of an abattoir. The DPO later revealed that my husband was among four policemen killed by unknown gunmen.”

A heartbroken Ngozi disclosed that she relocated from Lagos in July 2020, to get married, and lamented that her husband’s killers didn’t allow her to enjoy her union.

She said all her husband’s plans for her had been altered.

My husband was shot in my presence – Esther Abdul

Esther’s intermittent sighs were an instant give-away that she was gravely burdened. She looked lost and quite unsettled. At intervals, she went from placing her hands on the head to cupping her chin.

Investigations gathered she became delirious after witnessing the gruesome murder of her husband, Inspector Ali Abdul, by unknown gunmen at their residence in Ibiasoegbe, in the Oru West Local Government Area.

The deceased was attached to the Omuma Area Command.

Esther, who just had a baby, revealed that the assailants came around 2am.

“We were sleeping when my husband got a call from an unknown person to come outside,” she said with tears cascading down her cheeks.

“He initially refused, but when they threatened to come inside and kill all his family members, he agreed to their demand. As soon as he stepped outside wearing only his boxer, he was shot on the side.”

Esther said dealing with the trauma of witnessing her husband’s murder and nursing a baby had been tough.

We presently live on hope – Rachael Eziwanne

Sergeant Solomon Onyeneke was attacked by armed hoodlums at his duty post in Amanachi, in the Orsu Local Government Area on December 24, 2020.

The incident, which took place around 6pm, was reported to his wife, Rachael, by a policeman that narrowly escaped death.

The mother of four said she was taken to see her husband’s bullet riddled corpse at the Orlu Teaching Hospital mortuary on the same day.

Onyeneke was buried in his hometown, Obinze in the Owerri West Local Government Area in March.

The police, it was also learnt, had yet to fulfil the promise to offset burial expenses incurred by the family.

Gently rocking her 11 months old toddler to sleep, Rachael said her husband’s death left a financial vacuum, noting that she could barely fend for her children.

Though a petty trader, the widow said gains from the business could barely take care of their basic needs.

She is, however, hopeful that the police authority will not abandon her.

My husband sacrificed his life – Elizabeth Joseph

Sergeant Kombe Joseph was just two years old in the Nigeria Police Force when his life was gruesomely cut short during an attack on Umulowo Police Division, in the Obowo Local Government Area on February 5.

Left broken and shattered is his wife of eight years, 21-year-old Elizabeth from Cross River State.

“I learnt my husband had the opportunity to escape but stayed back to save the lives of his colleagues. I am consoled by the fact that he died gallantly,” she said.

Families of deceased police officer treated unfairly – Ifeyinwa

In a raspy voice, Ifeyinwa agonisingly told the story of how she lost her husband, Ifeanyi Oko, to armed men on May 31.

The 42-year-old sergeant, attached to the Awomama Divisional Police Headquarters, was from Umuosuma Village in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state.

With memories flooding back, the widow tried several times to recount what happened, but each time, words failed her.

She finally gave in to emotion and allowed the tears to flow freely.

At this point, the deceased’s elder brother, Onyebuchi, offered to speak on her behalf.

He told PUNCH Investigations that he had premonition about his brother’s death, and warned him to be careful days back.

He said, “On May 30, I called him around 11am to leave the office early. He decided to stay at a friend’s place due to the insecurity, so that he can resume on time and finish his night duty. By 7pm, shortly after he signed in, he was killed.”

Onyebuchi said he wished the deceased listened to his advice to resign from the police and start a business.

According to a top ranking police officer that spoke with PUNCH Investigations on condition of anonymity, the actual number of police officers killed across the country in the past one year, if revealed, would dampen the morale of others.

He said the figure was not one to be brandied in the public domain.

The Brigade Commander of 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Owerri, Imo State, Brigadier General Raymond Utsaha, disclosed during a press briefing in Owerri, that the ESN killed 128 military and police personnel, 15 civil defence officers and 31 community policing members in the South-East during the crises.

Because it is not the duty of police to pamper criminals. You need to define people, criminals are not people
