Anybody in the house to tell me about the tips in beating them at the US embassy? Learnt they are real hard there. That their hobby is denying innocent pple visas. Is there anybody that has "passed through" there before? Please be happy to share your experience with me (personal or borrowed experience)
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by layi(m): 1:08pm On Feb 11, 2006
I've attended the interview twice (years ago) and was denied without questions.

Of course, they have requirements like ties to your country, financial statements, well lined out career path, and basically the burden of proof is on you to proove you are only going to study and we'll be back upon completion of studies

However they do not follow this to the letter because of the ever increasing visa applicants.
The 2nd time i went for the interview, student visa applicants numbered up to 1500 that day.
That gives them the impression that we all want to run out so they now tighten their belts against us.

Most times , they just deny you without looking at your papers or asking any question. its pathetic but do i blame them?
The only grudge I have against them is the visa application fees they keep collecting and yet they deny u without asking any questions. Thats Fraud!

Thanks for ur suggestions. I am considering the UK schools but the money is scaring! Canada is as mad as US but I want to try their skilled worker immigration system. Has anybody in the house applied to the UK for student visa before? Can u tell if it is possible ot apply with a conditional letter of admission (condition being a deposit of part of the school fees)? Thanks guys

All I can say is PRAYERS!! Prayer is the key. It was the only thing that made everything work for me. I mean, like 5 guys before me were instant rejects, and the pple after me they reject them too. So men, put all your trust in God. If it is His will, no consular officer can stop you. Na shaking!!!
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by larger20(m): 1:31pm On Feb 15, 2006
Prayer is the key indeed. I know what u mean and i have been there, I think they teach people on visa stuff at no 10 broad street in lagos island
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by folababa: 2:01pm On Feb 15, 2006
Well first thing. they do not look at your documents to make thier decisions. i will give you some certain titbits to follow. when you go into that room for the interview, those guys have your information through their SEVIS network on ur I-20 form. That information is enough for them to make their decision. What info?
1. Like which school you r going to
2. What endowments the school has incase you have to recourse to public or school funds.
3. how you intend paying for school.
4. What course you r going there to study( not necessarily a creteria).
5. extracurricular

Now the biggest issue is funds. Out of the so assumed 1500 applicants, probably only ten can actually pay for the school. they know this. So that is y the interview seems so fast ,

"what do want to go and do in the United states?, u tell them,
What do you intend doing when you come back?, u tell them
I'm sorry you do not qualify for a united states visa , Next!, they r done with u! 10K gone!

on your I-20 form u must indicate clearly where your finance is coming from. if you got some scholarship it has to reflect there not just "from parents and personal" they most time don't take that crap.

try lay hands on a scholarship of some sort, choose a school that has enough endowments like howard Uni, in fact choose a black school. in ur form of app to the Uni indicate a some sport u do, this can will get u some scholarhip of some sort after u have enrolled. Remember that even Americans save over years to go to school or they go to school on loans, what they r very much concerned about is that, if they give you the visa, you would trully go to that school or you would have some form of support if you have a problem.

Lastly they also have visa allocations for each day
All i have typed is out of experience and information.

I came here in 2002, went with my brother. same last name he was denied, i was the next person (same interviewer) and they gave it to me, but the following monday he went again, and he got it. The good thing about it then was that you did not have to make an appointment. all you did was walk in. but you have to have clear career goals, all your documentation must be in order, better to have the document and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

You should also show how you are going to fund your education, tell them you are coming back home to Nigeria as soon as u finish your studies. If you tell them you plan to stay in the US nobody is going to give you a visa.
what else? you should also be able to answer the question "Why do you want to study in the United States"
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by Kokscity(m): 2:15pm On Feb 15, 2006
@Topic

I think God and Prayer is good and all, but i do not think that will help. There are simple strategies that will enhance your chances of getting the US F-1 Visa. I will be holding Free lectures/Seminars for Students in PH,Lagos and ABJ when next i come to Nigeria. Until then place your faith in a higher place. Congress is about to act on Immigration sometime in March or April, that is why i cannot give any definite advice. But everything Immigration,Including H-1,F-1,B-2,Visa Lottery,ETC will Change soon.

Kokscity is currently studying the US Immigration Laws!!
@Forgiven, it will be a mistake to apply to the US as a skilled worker!

Forgiven, I have applied for UK student visa before. You can get it with a conditional letter of admission but you have to pay a part of your school fees. The only other alternative is to look for a school where they don't ask you to deposit part of the school fees.  It's very rare to find one though, they are all thieves.

Don't waste your credit calling the line
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by GL(f): 1:03am On Feb 16, 2006
I also experienced this student visa problem, I was denied. My I-20 was genuine, I had a scholarship but I was denied. My scholarship wasn't full though, and I had a sponsor who was willing to pay the rest. Maybe that's what they didn't like. They asked me a few questions though, like:

my name

why i chose the particular school i did - i told them because it is a christian school

what i plan to do after my first degree (biology/premed) - i told them i wanted to go on to medical school there.

why i got the scholarship - i said because i did well on the SAT (1410)

then he asked to see my SSCE results, i showed him. he looked at it for about a minute, or more, then said he was sorry,

thinking back, maybe i didn't answer some questions right. like i shouldn't have said i wanted to go on to med. school. but that was the truth. i felt they should know that one can't go and do premed and come back here. it would be a waste of time. Someone told me that there are certain courses you do (especially those with high salaries there) and they don't believe you'll come back. i'm not sure how true this is.

UK is good but there are no scholarships, the same with Canada.

Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by forgiven(m): 2:43am On Feb 16, 2006
I sincerely agree with you all, it's God and prayers. Those guys there cannot be satisfied! I had a full scholarship and a research grant (according to the school, this is because of my over three years experience in the field). All these were clearly indicated in my I-20. The problem is that they are not eve ready to listen to u! Thrice I've been there now, negative. Somebody's suggesting I change my passport should I decide to go again. I want to quit trying, (afterall, my job's kool only that I need the master's for some seat i am eyeing in the office) but people advice against it saying winners don't quit, ENI MA JE OYIN INU APATA, KO NI WO ENU AKE, Anyway, life goes on. Let the WILL of God be done.

, I also got that mail and replied. Waiting for a reply for who or whatever it is. I know it's fraud but I love making them feel wise. Normally I bait them. If they are real intelligent, thy will knw, otherwise they will not disturb me again.
Re: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by Kokscity(m): 3:58am On Feb 16, 2006
@Forgiven

Changing your Passport would not help. Your Fingerprint is on file. If you change your passport you need to change you DNA too. I think you need to rethink your approach, but changing your passport will backfire on any embassy you go to.

@ Typewriter and Hot angel, I got that same mail from that guy too, i replied telling him politely i would like to have his official number at the office. The idiot simply replied,  ignoring me and  asking me for information about myself. I then sent the reply to his box:

Thanks for all the lovely gestures and information
about your yourself, workplace and your "WIfe" which
is at all of no interest to me. Is it not funny
enough, that you started with canada and ended by
telling u to apply for Uk HSMP. Who asked you for your
workplace in the first place? If you work at the High
Commision who cares? Whose business is that? Careers
at the High Commission is not the ultimate. Besides,
for your Information, I have an envious job.
The two domain you sent through your email address
(Woodrowworld, uk.gov.prg ) does not even exist. You
can try better by improving your communication skills
not everyone is as DUMB and FOOLISH as you are. I
simply consider this mail as a email full of typhos
and sent email from public domain in Nigeria.

I never in the world thought a member of nairaland could go to that extent of trying to dupe one by checking up members profile and getting their email addresses. I think something has to be done fast before Nairaland becomes POLLUTED WITH BAD BLOODS.
