Your disappointment matters not in the grand scheme of things.

Generational profit off a 1 season mini-series where the official language is not even English and according to you, "they should have borrowed money". You must think the networks are operating on Nigerian economics.

Half the shows you mentioned didn't even have major battles until seasons 2 or 3 when said shows could run themselves on profit from previous seasons.
Be calming down, don't take out your life's frustrations on me.
My disappointment doesn't matter, so is your approval too.
Infact non of the things we say on nairaland matters in the grand scheme of things.
However every series is going to have critics, no matter how good the series, there will be those who are going to find one or two faults in the show.
It's called personal opinion and you have to respect people's opinion as long as it doesn't affect you.
This online attitude of attacking people's opinions ended with me as at 2019 or so.
As i grow mature, i began to leave childish things behind and just respect people's opinion of things and that's what we call maturity.

And i said what i said about the series, it's a nice series but i was expecting a battle or at least an epic fight.
Any show can be extended to second or 3rd seasons, it won't start with shogun or end with shogun.
HBO can decide tomorrow to pick it up and continue with a second season.
Anything is possible so you gats to be calming down.

And lastly, all major organizations lends money from the bank to fund projects, it's not a Nigeria thing only.
You are not a business or a financial inclined person so i don't expect you to understand.
Even bill gate can sort for funds from financial institutions or personalities to fund a project, so like i said earlier, you have to be calming down and allow people states their opinion.

By the way, a series don't need to have English as its official language before it can become a blockbuster series.
Lots of Korean series are not even in English and yet they became hits all over the world in just one season.
Korea series like vagabond was a hit and it's not even in English.
This ongoing Korea series called queen of tears is already a hit globally and it's not even in English.

Spanish series like money heist, elites, visavis, cable girls were not in English and they all became hits in their first seasons.

So a series doesn't need to be in English to make generational profits.
If the owners of shogun knew the series was going to be a massive hit like this, they would have changed lots of things or even prepare for a second season but they never expected it to be this massive.

What followed after the battle of Sekigahara was 200 years of peace so there's literally nothing for HBO to pick up.

And if it's that easy to borrow money, why didn't HBO borrow money for season 1 of GOT to give us the Battle of Whispering Wood where Robb captured Jamie?

When there is no guarantee that a show will be a hit, borrowing money for the show especially a show that is supposed to have only one season means the network is already operating at a loss.

FX worked within their set budget for Shogun and gave us the best they could. No way they were going to go borrow money to give us a battle that was over before it was even fought

Well it is what it is.
Like i said, they never knew the series would be a hit, they had no guarantee and belief, if they knew, they would have done better, even drifting little from the source material just to give us an epic show.

If an organization believed in a project, they will have no issue spending money on the project.
Projects like the wheel of time, HBO's house of the dragons, Netflix's avatar the last air bender all had more dollar budget than shogun and yet they all became a hit.
However, we can argue that these series i mentioned all had fan base before because of their past previous shows from which they were taken from but what of shows like the peaky blinders, the crown, vikings and Co.

The truth is that if it was HBO or Amazon or Netflix that handled shogun, they would have done better.

"Mr. Mercedes" (S1 - S3) 2017 - 2019.

"Every religion lies. Every moral precept is a delusion. Even the stars are a mirage. The truth is darkness, and the only thing that matters is making a statement before one enters it".

A crazed, psychotic, and sadistic serial killer is locked in a deadly cat and mouse game with a detective in a small fictional town of Bridgton, Ohio with an intense obsession of ending each other fuelling the whole thing, ringing out morbid repercussions, for everyone around them.

Adapted from the first 2 books of Stephen King's "Mr Mercedes" trilogy. It feels like an Anthology in a way, S1 differs from S2, which also differs from S3, plot wise, but they all bear the same characters and elements, with everything happening in the same universe and intricately woven together.

It totally kept me glued all week, and the network that made it were only able to adapt the first 2 books before they went bust in 2020, and i sincerely do hope another network picks this up and deliver the final book.

peak crime thriller drama... totally recommend

.
What are they even going to do in said "2nd season", since they have exhausted the source material?, just conjure up a stories from thin air? because I tell you that almost never ends well.

These things are planned and are not just afterthought, they knew they will be able to cover the book in one 10 episode season mini series and they did just that and had a very fantastic go of it.

The network it was on, doesn't need to stretch it any further to stay relevant, they have a huge catalogue of extremely good shows, like they hardly ever miss.

I leave you with a show called "Big Little Lies" from HBO one time, it was a classic one mini series season show, as the book author intended, and the S1 was a hit, then they forced a S2 that she didn't even write, and slapped big names on it for some women empowerment gimmick, and the S2 never really hit the height of S1, because it looked forced.

In life, sometimes, or i dare say, things just end, good or bad, and that's it.

I understand your point.
I am just saying that networks like HBO could have stretched the series a little bit to give it more talking points and wonderful scenes like for example, the assassination attempt that mariko took her life in, they could have made it a little more blockbuster like a proper battle just to add spice to the series.

Even the sex scenes could have been taken extreme with HBO too.
My point is that other networks would have added something more to the series even if it's just going to be season 1.

"They could have expanded the budget and shown us an epic battle."

Fam, there was no epic battle. It was a gΓ ngbang. It was bullying. It was Arsenal vs Chelsea.

Did you people not listen to what Toranaga was telling Yabushige? Once Ochiba, my milf, pulled support from Ishido, the man was done. There was no heroic last stand. Just a shameful walkover.

Know that you were never denied an epic battle because there was never going to be one and know peace.

I find it quite funny with peeps thinking this show is about epic battles. Because the trailers and early episodes made it so appetising.

When you get to episode 8 and especially that "Crimson Sky" episode 9 with no fvvking battle na from there I lose hope of any giant battle scenes.

The details of the show is in the politics and merry go round between Toranaga and Ishido.

I didn't enjoy not seeing a battle at episode 9 but that cowardly manner Mariko was killed all but made it more interesting and showed the true weapon of Toranaga. Sowing deceit and dissent amongst the Regents.
Anna Sarwai is going places with that performance. Seeing her in the Godzilla TV show felt her character was boring, lifeless and annoying but now I know why cause she just finished filming for SHOGUN and faced issues moving out of character of Lady Mariko.
