It depends on the mileage you cover. Take a note of your mileage and change after 3500 miles or 3 months, which ever comes first.

The oil can stay six months but you need to use an efficient oil filter, not knockoffs.

Not tokunbo. But personally I like to use manufacturers prescribed oil. So if I buy a car, I drain what is there before and change to manufacturers prescribed oil

Okay. But I will advise you to read history from nairaland threads. If the engine is abused, and you changed to synthetic oil, it would clean up the sludge. The pick up screen will be clogged by same sludge and likely block oil flow. You know what that means.

I prefer to use mileage when it comes to oil change.

Most petrol cars will do 5,000 - 10,000miles OCI with full synthetic oil.
My diesel car will confidently do 15,000 to 20,000miles on a single oil change.

Although, there are special considerations for sparingly driven cars.

For instance, this car is 9 years old. But it's serviced every 1,200miles or 12 months because its not frequently used.
