What Is The Church's Stance On Marijuana? by ak042015: 4:57pm On Aug 28, 2021
Both recreational and medicinal use of marijuana has increased significantly in recent years. Not only that, but the legal situation in the U.S. has also become much more permissive. Many patients rave about the impact that medical use has had on their lives, and recreational users rave about the relaxing experience and prefer it to indulge in other intoxicating substances like alcohol.
Still, for many Christians, it can be difficult to understand what exactly the Bible says about marijuana use, and how the church itself feels about it. Advice regarding marijuana use can also differ depending on which denomination of Christianity you subscribe to. If you're a marijuana user or looking to try it, keep reading to learn more about the church's stance on marijuana.
How is medical marijuana typically used?
The nature of marijuana use has evolved meaningfully over the past few decades. Originally perceived as primarily an intoxicant used for recreational purposes, recent studies have indicated that there may be a role for marijuana-based products and medicines to play within the healthcare world. Organizations like American Marijuana can help you better understand how the legality of marijuana within the United States and the variety of ways it can be used both recreationally and medicinally. Recreational use is obviously still popular, but experts have learned much more over recent decades about the utility of marijuana as medicine.
Medical marijuana is currently used to treat a variety of conditions in areas where it is legally permitted. The research-based evidence available seems to support the idea that marijuana may have therapeutic benefits when it comes to treating chronic pain, nausea caused by chemotherapy, and muscle issues related to multiple sclerosis. However, additional studies are being done to determine the health benefits marijuana may have for conditions ranging from Alzheimer's to epilepsy mental health conditions like PTSD and certain types of anxiety.
What is the church's stance on marijuana?
As with many religious debates, different Christian books and denominations have varying interpretations of the issue. A common interpretation, and one favored by the Methodist church, is that there is a difference between recreational use and medical use. Many denominations of Christianity discourage the use of alcohol or drugs in a broad sense for recreational purposes, and caution strongly against the misuse of drugs. However, many churches understand that not all cannabis users are using the plant for the purpose of recreation.
As long as you're using marijuana with a valid prescription and to address a medical condition where marijuana is recommended as a treatment, the Methodist Church condones its use . Other denominations of Christianity may not share this view. Many leaders with the Southern Baptist community, for example, are resistant to even the idea of medical use. If you're unsure about your particular church's views, the best thing to do is ask.
As marijuana use has become more widespread, many people have wondered if the use of marijuana could benefit them. The legal situation within the U.S. regarding the use of cannabis varies depending on which state you live in, and it remains illegal under federal law. This means that users should always operate cautiously and obey the laws in whatever part of the country they reside in.
No matter the context, lying and breaking the law aren't encouraged within Christianity. While different churches have different interpretations of the Bible's prescriptions with regard to marijuana use, most religious experts agree that taking care of your health is a matter of utmost importance in any circumstance. If you have concerns about the impact marijuana use may have on your religious journey, it's a good idea to talk to your priest or pastor and ask for guidance.

Like so many other things in life, there are limits before good becomes excess. Marijuana may be good medically for some conditions but isn't always good for every abuser of it.
