Better go and do change of ownership. So that the car documents will now carry your name.

You don't want to get into problems with the police and they will accuse you of stealing a car.

Yes you can.

I used to drive an hyundai accent but I was stopped by police 4am in the morning heading to Ondo, I said it belonged to a friend and they asked me to call him then and there they wanted to waste my time until an incident happened and they let me go.

I drive a car in a womans name currently I just told them it belongs to my sister and memorize the name they always let me go, I will not do change of ownership for now because of fresh plate wahala from police to customs it's an interstate ride.

For peace of mind change if you can afford it.

If you do affidavit and police draft, what's then remaining for you to complete the process?

In the case I talked about, the paper was still very valid. Yet police harassed and extorted the guy.

They first asked for his driver's license which he gave them.

Then they asked for the papers and saw that the name on the paper was different from the name on the license.

They now asked him who owns the car, he said it was his. That he just bought it.

They asked if he owned the car, why was the name on the document different from the name on the license.

All attempts to explain fell on deaf ears. He letter settled them with huge money as thy took him to the station.

I generally prefer to avoid issues wit police. Do the same if you can afford to.

If you must use the car in former owner's name then never tell the police it is your own, tell them it is a friend's car, or your Oga's car. I think the Oga own works better, but let the former owner know about it, there can be emergencies.

Once the papers expire, get yourself new papers and change of ownership.

You don't need an affidavit, just behave like the car isn't yours in the presence of these guys in uniform.
