We feed the pigs atleast 50kg of pkc & pig concentrate daily, thats because we have over 100 pigs at the moment.

I feed them for different purposes, for fattening and for reproduction.
For fattening, we feed the pigs well for say a year and few months, by then, they would have attained atleast 90kg of body weight, then we sell 'em off.

For reproduction, we are mostly careful on how to ration their food in order to avoid fat. Fat hinders pigs from reproducing good numbers of litters.

And as for the market, there are always standby buyers, they weigh the pigs, and then buy in whole. We dont know what they do with the body parts thereafter.

Ese Sir, can I discuss with you privately? I've got 3 matured boars ready for sale. Make you introduce me to your buyers, we'll discuss price

Its not advisable to buy a pig you dont know its history, the buyer could be selling due to the antecedent of that pig, it could be due to still birth often, low number of production of such pig or could have gotten pregnant as a result of in-breeding.

If you arent convinced, then you will be taking a big risk. Either way, goodluck.

1. At how many months does your pigs get to table size and what is the weight at this age?

2. What age does your pig get to 200kg? Is it worth it to keep meat pig to such an age?
wizzie001:

I've expended close to 2million, securing the land, building materials and labour is quite on the high side now. For a starter, i will advise you use wood to construct your pen, you will still need to concrete the floor anyway.
I got my weaners at the range of 25-30k, i ensure a vet comes in once a month for check-up, i currently have more than 10pigs now and i spend roughly 30k on feeds monthly.

Your profit comes from either you are rearing for fattening or to keep reproducing so you can keep selling the weaners. Some farmers castrate their pigs so it can grow so big to sell for slaughters, a kilo of pork now is #1200, imagine if you have 10 pigs that weighs 200kg each?
And if it is for selling your piglets, the least price for a weaner now is 18k, the exotic breeds cost way more, so if your female pig gives birth to lets say atleast 8 piglets, multiply it by 18k. Good business huh?

You can get it at fan milk, chivita or any yoghurt producing company around you, just ask for milk waste.
How do you store or preserve this milk from getting spoiled? And how long can you store?
Re: Diary Of A Pig Farmer by safarifarms(m): 10:00pm On Dec 26, 2023
In your experience, how would you compare the growth performance of landrace, large white and duroc especially against camborough on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best?
wizzie001:

Where is your location?

Sincerely, all the breeds are good considering the feeds formula and care they receive.
However, pig farmers always prefer large white and landrace the most. Duroc is more expensive than these breeds.

Well, the feeds formula goes a long way in determining how fast your pigs gets to table size. I give my pigs combination of ultima starter, pkc & milk waste if i want a rapid growth.

There is no point leaving my pigs to get to 200kg for slaughter, the highest i've gone was 180kg, it was way too big that the farm hand was now scared of entering the pen, i had to let it off.

I store the milk in a drum, and i ensure they drink all within a week, reason being that, the more it stays, it intoxicates the weaners that they start rolling and tumbling on the floor.

I'm laughing so hard about the intoxication.
You got them high with alcohol.

The other problem with alcohol is that it kills appetite. So it can possibly reduce feed consumption.

The breeds you mentioned up here are unique in their own way, the difference is just that large white & duroc can reach 380kg body weight if well managed, whereas land race could barely achieve 250kg, but they are good mothers and tend to give birth to more litters.

Camborough is a mixed breed, they have the capacity of achieving massive body weight too and they tend to reproduce well enough.

A drum of milk we use in mixing their feeds, after taking the milk, you will see some of the pigs napping while eating, it induces sleep and it helps them grow faster and fresher!

how do you get this milk
