Some of my lectures were amazing. A particular lecturer celebrated my birthday, paid all my bills. Anytime I'm broke he gives me money. Nigeria is an oppressive country. People unconsciously think power is ment for oppressing the weak and venerable. If not for the power of social media many would have been sitting ducks in this country with no help in sight because the law that should protect them is biased/afraid of the rich, influential or powerful.

Nigerian lecturers are not heartless. My course/project adviser bought me food and gave me recommendation to do my NYSC in a good company. He sent me to his friend's company. Another one gave me his ATM card to run errands for him.

In the same university, there was one lecturer who attempted to ruin my life, but stopped when he knew who I was. My dad came from the village to see him.

He was a Babalawo.

Abroad, a professor bought us cakes and drinks after completing his course. Another one invited us to his house for dinner. The worst I met was a German one who hated some students, and enjoyed them getting into trouble. There was another one who seemed to have self esteem issues because he always picked fights with students. I had to tell the Dean of Grad School to prevent him from being the only person managing students.

I gave all these examples to show you that it is not about the country but about the personalities. Being white does not mean being decent. Be careful of hasty generalisation. I have seen the education system in 8 countries and can speak confidently about these nuances.

Today I was at my first lecture in my university at the UK. We were told to do introduction by the lecturer of the course we attended and after that the lecture began, at some point we have to take break for rest.

Then the lecturer offered to buy drink for all the students that were in class at the school canteen. We all followed the lecturer to the school canteen and grabbed a drink, even when a white boy was insisting not to collect the offer, the lecturer was begging him that he had already paid for every body that the boy should just take a drink.

Then my mind returned back to Nigeria to those days when I was still doing my bachelor degrees and remember what those witches and demons lecturers did to students. I was just like why? Who did Nigeria offend that we are so cruel? even when I met police last week after I lost my way, you can see how their police was polite and showed me road. Them nor ask me anything for the boys. We need to start to get things right from our foundation and not blaming the government always.
