Based on some of the experiences i have heard with some these vehicles. I can tell you that been popular or well praised doesnt truly mean they are better. They all possess their pros and cons.
Some toyota's are shitboxes while some mazda's are too. Just like some toyotas can be glorious to you while some mazda's too can be magnificent to me
It really takes an enthusiast to really determine what really makes sense or not.

They cover the highest mileage on road with their vehicles, they know their cars, just like they know their guns. They are Toyotas biggest market and have their largest factories. The Corolla is the highest selling vehicle ever.... Their popularity is for a reason; affordability & reliability. They are not meant to be liked by all, but haba even KIA & Hyundai of today cant be called shitboxes if you know the innovations and technologies they have brought into the autonomous world.

Every car manufacturer has issues & recalls, but Toyota has amongst the least, Mazda has been on the lead for the last two years for most reliable car brand. Todays cars are way more reliable across board than cars made 20yrs ago. And i am sure the bad experiences you heard of are not cars made of recent. Respect bro...
