Hello here, I am 21 years I lived alone in Lagos my parents lived in kwara state , I am confused about my life right now. I finished secondary school in 2017 ever since I am done. I have started hustling so I can save to go uni cos my parent can't afford to send me but now is very clear that I can't send myself .
I got a factory job as a cleaner in 2019 the pay is 30,000 savings has not been easy cos feeding +rent and sometimes I do sent some stipends home . So yesterday I was fired from the work. Am just confused I don't know the next step I should take All I have in my account is 30,000 mind u I just renew my rent 2days ago (36000).
I don't know if I should search for another job or go back home and learn a vocational skill and digital skill (DBMS) ( I don't have any skill in mind )tailor, plumber and barbing are exception cos I don't have passion for those. I have laptop Acer travelMate 291lmi, I have downloaded some DBMS tutorial on YouTube tutorial but I haven't been practicing due to lack of electricity in my environment here in osoroko village ibeju lekki. Pls sir/ma I need your Advice

Since you just retained your apartment then it's advisable to stay put. I'd urge you to leave a skill immediately. Learning a skill like barbing would be great and you can be working with/for your boss by the time you're done.

That should keep you working and also getting you some money.

It will take up to 6 month or a year before i can be perfect and whoever is gonna teach me won't do so for free . Another things is what will I be eating through those 6month as apprentice

This is where your family will come in. You will need to get financial assistance from them in order to make it through your period of apprenticeship. Moreover, I'd suggest you have a contract duration agreement with whosoever that wanna reach you the skill in order for you to have an organized plan.

But the clause about that type of agreement is that you will need to be well focused and dedicated to your learning so as to achieve your goal within the time frame. I wouldn't advice you to stay longer than 6 month to learn.

Hello, So I don't know how serious you are about your situation now but here is my two pence. Note that this is my opinion so you don't have to take it in.

I am female and 22 currently with zero degree and no present option to also go back to school. Unlike you I live with my parents now and I sort of have some form of support, but I am still a major contributor back home, so i know the pressure.

First off, get a job. Now I would say try freelancing but if you don't have a skill like writing or some tech or digital skill, trust me freelancing will be a nightmare. So get a full time job. Why? Because you need to survive first. Having no money or source of income is not a good idea here in Lagos. Get something doing but realize its a means to an end not an end in itself. I advice looking for jobs in field that interest you. No matter how small. I liked kids and teaching so my first job 5 years ago was at a nursery school I got 20k then. it kept me going while I learned a skilled.

Next I would advice you go for Coursera. Its a great source of skill and if you are lucky with your application for financial aid, you can get a course for free and earn the certification. It is quite recognized and you can use it in the long run. My advice pick a tech skill, it's the next big thing.

Coursera courses run for about 8 week on average. My recommendation is to look for specializations rather than courses. they are more intensive and cover a broader topic which you need. The courses are flexible and you can study using your mobile.

I am a writer now, I work from home, I make good money and bla bla bla. But its about planning and determination. Set your goal first and you will be shocked also do your best.

But these are not what I wanted to tell you. It's okay to be confused at this stage, particularly when your parents are not buoyant enough to help you. I see many people saying 'go back to your parents and have them advice you and have them help you financially... 'But if you are anything like my situation, where my parents although great people where also confused financially and in what next they could offer their kids, going back to them is pointless.

You are in Lagos and you are young. You also have a bright future ahead of you. Do not be swayed by the luxury you see in Lagos, stay focused on building yourself first. 21 is a bright age and you can immerse yourself in so many great skills and paths. This is your time to make or break your entire future. I learned this early, I dont know how much you like reading, but I encourage you to explore the lives of great men.

The key point I have learned from them is,

Take advantage of your youth to build yourself. By the time you turn 30 you have way to many responsibilities to build yourself anymore. Leave relationships, luxury and such and build yourself. In the end this is your journey not your parents, not your friends, but yours.

Above all ehen, and maybe I am too religious, but in this life if you want to succeed, get on your knees and realize who is boss in your life. The road will be tough o even with God, but trust me it will be worse without him. If I tell you my story even in this my small 22 years, you will calm down. Find God and strike a deal with him. Give him a ten year goal, make a personal sacrifice to him, and watch and see how well he plans. I tell everyone I know now, I dont know how I got to where I am today, I dont know how I will get to where I want to be tomorrow, but sha I have a leader and all I know is to follow.

Anyway, good luck and I hope you make the right choice.

Coincidentally, 21 was the most befuddling year of my life as a young adult. like you, my parents couldn't send me to school due to financial constraints. Broke, hopeless and unable to further my education(and seeing my mates doing great)- it was devastating.

I wouldn't want to bother you with my own life history cos the poster above has done an excellent job. please follow up on the advice she gave; it's sound.

However, here's my own piece of advice>> HAVE A GAME PLAN. You must realize that what you like or what you want is irrelevant right now. Start from somewhere before hunger and house rent become a problem.

Can you multitask? Yes? Good. whatever you choose to do to put food on your table and a roof over your head, do not forget to also take steps to learn a digital skill in your spare time. it won't be easy. you would be tired most days, but you must try. The moment you can remove feeding and accommodation from your list of problems, you will be in a better position to think clearly and plan better. But you see, right now, you have no choice. Find a job, and fast.

In case you're curious, I later got into the university at the age of 24. I'm currently an interior decorator and freelance writer at 26.

One day, all your hardwork will pay off.

My advice: since you reside in a semi urban area there should be construction works going on in your area & I know they pay well, so survey your area to meet bricklayers, tillers etc you don't need expertise cos they will teach you on d job.
Even if they tell u no job still collect their contact(get like 4 different contacts in diff places)

Because u won't work everyday, it will give u time to go to where there is light so u can learn a digital skill, cyber café sef fit help matter and u won't pay training fee at once.

Life at 21 is when you start to lay Foundation.....

Since you already have a years rent stay. The only part time job i feel can give you time to learn a skill as a young man in lag is maybe security or driving....... most jobs + traffic will render you extremely fatigued.....

Discover yourself & what you plan to do for the rest of your life. Not everyone is meant to go to school..... don't be confused....take it a step at a time....as far as you have realized your direction.....
