Nigeria's Ckay (real name Chukwuka Ekweani) is currently the number one artist on the shazam global chart as revealed on Shazam's website and their Twitter handle. Ckay's hit song "Love Nwantiti is also the most "shazamed" song in the world this week. He has held this title every week since September 26, 2021.

Shazam is an application that can identify music, movies, advertising, and television shows, based on a short sample played and using the microphone on the device. It was created by London-based Shazam Entertainment, and has been owned by Apple Inc. since 2018. Shazam is one of the most popular music apps in the world.

You can call it a streaming app too but the main selling point is that it is an app used to recognize or get the name of a song and the lyrics. Let us take for instance, you heard a song on the radio but you do not know the artiste or title or lyrics to the song, all you need to do is to play a snippet or record a section of the song or type in the sections of the lyrics and it will find the full song for you plus the lyrics to the song.

The app has been quite popular for a while even before apple bought the company.

This is not how Shazam works. Look at the top 10 and the top 10 songs, you will see that these features some of the biggest artists in the world.

Sometimes people hear a song on the radio and can't tell the artist immediately and sometimes need to know the exact lyrics. Sometimes, they do not know the song at all.. or sometimes the language. Shazam is international, there are a lot of people in the world who do not understand words.

Even WizKid's Essence is in the top 200 of this chat.

I believe what made this particular song popular is Tiktok.. it is quite big on tiktok recently and there is an international distributor in Warner music, partnering with the artiste.

A version of the song, is nearing 80 million and another version, more than 60 million stream on YouTube. These streams happened within the past 2 weeks although the actual song was released last year.

There are also different versions of the song, from North African to Spanish to Nigerian.

TikTok and international distributors have a way of making music viral again.

Wizkid is great, but do you know that Ckay's 3 versions of "love Nwantiti" have more views on youtube than all the views on MIL combined? Including Essence? By the end of this year, he will surpass Wizkid's highest viewed song on YouTube if you consider the pace.
Wizkid is great and I will not like to compare them both or say Ckay is the absolute best in Nigeria but currently, his song is the hottest Nigerian song on the international scene.
