I worked as a teacher for about 2yrs as an ICT teacher in a school where the students pay above 550k per term yet my take home for the first 6months was 47,500 after 6months it was increased to 51,500 then after 18 months it was increased to 61,500.

I was spending N240 on Tfair alone and for food I spend roughly N400 for morning alone...
Once pay comes, my mom gets 10k from the money, other bills take and I struggled to save 20k monthly.

Fast forward to 2020 when covid came we resulted to online classes and that gave me time to use the night and prepare lesson for all the classes during the day I go out to hustle, when it is time for my class I drop the prepared videos and everything for the students to watch/listen to and ask questions.

Covid was an eye opener... I was hustling like a school dropout under sun and rain, my skin color change from yellow to chocolate but I was making sometimes above 80k a week.

To cut the long story short, in less than a year, I bought a land worth 1.5m in Ibeju lekki, I got a descent accommodation, I place my mom on weekly stipends of 7k, my girlfriend who believed in me gets 5k weekly in school, I got a car for uber biz and will be getting another one next year and process visa for my younger bro too next year.

All these gotten in less than 2yrs after quitting my teaching job. The same school now i am their ICT consultant and they are like bro u dey fat ooo, u dey look good ooo e be like the street favours u.

Some of the teachers have stayed there for more than 15yrs and struggling but too scared to leave... There was a time one of my student the granddaughter of an influential lady in Nigeria (name withheld) told me... Sir, you are a fine and intelligent teacher but you do not have a bright future because you are a teacher, the whole class said "yes"

I went back to my desk (the ict lab) and was lost in thought, I couldn't sleep all through the week thinking of what that girl said

So, that's my story, the man didnt lie... Sometimes we look at those who get dirty while hustling and we think we are better than them.

I am still hustling and looking dirty, sometimes those so called officer workers come to buy what I sell and they try to talk to me anyhow thinking they are better or I am an illiterate because they are in the office taking AC and putting on suit. There was a time I blast a lady who was going overboard with her utterances, I made her to understand that I have worked in office settings, my lab alone had very chilling AC with 24/7 internet and if I should present my certificate from primary to university she will understand the kind of student that I was. She left with her tail between her legs

There are 2 private school teachers that live with their wives and a kid each in my neighborhood.

Didn't even know they are graduates considering their low level of life. My first surprise was when one of them approached me to let him use my car to straighten his hand in driving. From there we got talking, he said the salary from the teaching is too meager that a friend promised to introduce him to who will recruit him as a driver.

Some few weeks later without hearing from his friend I now introduced him to my friend who is looking for a driver for his bakery.

His second neighbor quickly approached me to also include him in the employment.
Presently, one of them has already started driving and distributing bread, while the other one is wrapping bread in the bakery.
Anytime they see me they now greet me with full respect

I don’t see why he is complaining though. If he really believes teaching is what he wants to do, he should find means of optimizing his earnings. I know many proprietors are demonic but as an engaged teacher, he has a leverage to have private students he tutors thereby making more money. Tutoring online is also an option open to him.

This na my imagination o. Teachers on the field can throw in more light. The challenges and the prospects. Una good afternoon.
The kind of crass ignorance being displayed on this thread will shock even the devil himself. Bricklaying job is more lucrative than a teaching job? Like seriously? angry angry

Now, let's begin this way. George Crane once said; 'there is no future in any job, the future lies in the person who is doing the job'. Teaching job may seem meagre if the person doing the job doesn't carve a niche for himself or find a way to make it lucrative. To be a successful teacher, you gotta have the requisite qualification, certifications and trainings. Then, you'll understand the tide and trend so as to position yourself properly. Many graduates who venture into teaching do not possess a quarter of these, yet they complain that the venture isn't lucrative. Keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.

'Teaching job is this' 'Teaching job is that'. Please speak for yourself and stop the fallacy of hasty generalization.

PS- I'm a teacher and to the glory of God, I'm doing very well.

Teacher ''Adio" is saying the truth.
All these artisan that wears tattered clothes around has built comftable houses over there head. And graduates are still struggling to feed himself talkless of getting marry.

Handwork is the best.

istina:
I used to think there is no basis for comparing a Teacher with a Bricklayer but a recent event change my line of thinking.

I went to visit a friend at a construction site around Meiran in Lagos two days ago, and almost immediately I got there I noticed that one of the Bricklayers working there was being called TEACHER by his co-workers. I wondered what would make his colleagues be calling him Teacher, could it be that he is so good that he even trains his colleagues on the job?

So, I inquired about him from one of his colleagues why they refer to him as TEACHER, the man replied that he is actually a school Teacher. Not satisfied, I went to TEACHER himself to hear from the horse’s mouth. The man who appears to me as a man in his mid-40’s told ne his name is ADIO; he said he is actually a trained Teacher and had taught in several schools before deciding to leave the Teaching profession for Bricklaying.

When I asked him why he left Teaching he said

‘things are hard in this country and the mingy, chintzy, niggard school owners make things harder for their workers with the way they treat them thereby; making it difficult for someone like me to feed myself and family. Even the peanuts, meagre pellet which they are expected to pay at the end of the month, the avaricious, penurious and tight-fisted proprietors find it difficult to part with them. It is either they are short-paying or under-paying or not paying. By the end of the month you as an ‘educated pauper’ are actually living from hands to mouth like a blind shrew

I asked him why Bricklaying of all jobs,
‘I taught professionally as a school Teacher with both my NCE and Degree Certificates for over 20 years yet I have nothing to show for it but since almost 3 years now that I’ve fully embrace Bricklaying things have been more than better. God has been too faithful to me and by His Grace by December I will be moving into my own cosy and comfy house at Atan in Ogun State. What I couldn’t achieve for more than 20 years as a Teacher I’ve been able to do so in less than 3 years as a Mason. If reincarnation is true then, in my next life I would choose Bricklaying over Teaching over and over again.’ ADIO said.

Very nepotistic cow.

A pack of Indomie is now N2,900! Something that used to be N1,300 two years ago.

Bottle Table water is now N100

Sardine is now N500

In some places, one single egg is now N100

12.5 kg of gas is now N6500

Engine oil 1LT is now N3000! Etc

N500 can hardly feed anyone satisfactorily in a booker or mamaput restaurant..

I wonder what state this country will be by 2023.

Where did you buy 12.5kg for 6,500?

Least is 8k

bro like seriously it's not their fault
I once had a cousin who worked in a private school for 2 years n he had nothing to show for it despite not drinking, not womanising,no girlfriend n even oweing many loan apps that they do send annoying messages to our phone.

My brother called him to discuss the way forward n we realised he was earning 25k monthly with transport fare of 300 naira per day n compulsory lesson till 5pm n at the end of the term the school will give them 10k as lesson money.

By d time he gets home by 6pm he will b tired n exhausted n d next thing is to start planning for the next day work n in all these once u miss school for a day maybe for interview elsewhere or anything it's 1k deduction.

So bro in this case which option does he have?

At the end of the day everyone gathered fund for him to.start something small n he's kinda fine now from how he use to b

Bro it's not a matter of settling for peanut but many don't have d opportunity to do better n nobody to help
One thing I av learnt from such people is that, they take the easy way.

See the logic there...25k...

On annual it 300k.

Now, having a business worth 300k and having a return of a certain percentage out of it every month is the the entrepreneur mind in that person.

Having done that, after one year, definitely business must have Improved..He can decide to inject extra 150k in the business to increase the monthly returns a bit.

Now, his worth is around 500k...With a monthly returns.

As year progresses he keeps growing provided he knows what he is doing.

As years pass by, he is now employing one or two person to assist.

But on that 35k income, even if he get promoted to pick 80k in 5years time, with a mentality of monthly salary earner...He will have little or nothing to account for.

The moment you have something you are managing as yours, it comes with bigger responsibility and more effort.

That kind of teaching should be a starting stuff, and one should have other things to help augment while pushing for a better life.

As man, that type is cool if he is holding on while furthering his studies...

If not, it is for married women to help pass time and assist their husbands in their own little way.

On our site in Delta, we started paying #60 per blocks and the good ones will set 240 and above daily. The labor or helper takes 20 so the mason keeps 40. 240*40=9,600 then multiplied by 7 days because anytime we are outside Abuja, we work even on Sundays, then multiplied by 3 weeks and see how it is better than being paid #45,000 as a teacher with some funny dress codes and having #2k deducted for being a minute late.

Bricklaying is not a job I will advice one do for a long time cos honestly, half of what you make goes to medication. As you age, your waist is gone. Some can't do anything again cos of sickness. Overstretched muscles and bones. Do it a bit and move to something else even if it gives you half of what bricklaying gives you.

Very hard and abused labour.

Well it depends on the school and flexibility.
Some schools pay more than 100k and some between the minimum wage and 100k.

No amount of money is enough for one.
Side hustle is the best and development in one's field.

Online tutoring is available.

I once had a class that it was 1k per head per day.

So it depends on the individual.

I have seen rich teachers and broke teachers
And I have seen rich masons and broke masons

Some will prefer white collar jobs with peanuts rather than having their own business to provide goods and services.

Bricklayer is a stressful job, not everyone can engage in it. I prefer a job that is brain-tasking to physical strength.

After spending 20 years in school, one would end up working with his strength. What was the essence of going to school in the first place? I will advise one should rather learn a skill.

Bricklaying will tell on you when you grow old.

People are always complaining about private school teaching. Yes there are some develish properiotrs

The big schools that pay well charge high fees. Is Pampers or corona abi Avi Cenna that charges 200- 500k for a small child that won't pay well?
How much do you pay as school fees for your child before shouting this nonsense.

I know of schools in this Lagos that charge 5k per term and parents of the children complain that it is high. And they will still owe even with low fees.

Tell them to pay 20k for nursery class they would complain not to talk about primary school pupils.
As much as you want to blame the owners, you should also face the parents.

How many of you don't owe school fees or don't do carry over to the next term?

How much do you pay as school fees?

I know three schools that shut down this session because of bad debt from parents.

A school that pays teachers 50k will charge a minimum of 40k for school fees with at least 15-20 children per class.

Please tell them o. Fees collected once have to pay three monthly salaries for each term. Not to talk of other stuff. I have an who owns a private school. When she showed me their numbers, I was dumbfounded. They are barely head above water as so many parents owe.
