this is perentie monitor ... E full my village in Delta state.. orogun. We don't harm it, so it comes to visit and mix freely with people without fear even coming inside the house to greet people and eat yams. It also eats eggs if it sees them

It's nice to see that people take care of and allow these animals to be. I like these lizards, but they are quite rare in urban areas.

Do you people have any type of worship or history with these lizards? Are they a sign of good luck, etc?

It's not from the sewage system , if what you wrote is true then your friend should go and check from broken window, broken pipes or maybe the exit door was open , this cannot even craw in a broken pipe so certainly window or doors must have been open
