There are some jobs that are so common in those days let’s say 17th, 18th and 19th centuries ago and are classified as been odd in this our century/age. Let’s discuss some right now. As the saying goes; we learn everyday

1. LECTORS; In the 1920s, people working long hours in their cubicles didn’t have any form of entertainment to break up d workday monotony, unlike those of us in the modern day who can take quick breaks to scroll through social media. Employers started bringing in professional “lectors” to entertain office workers by reading news, stories, and other forms of literature aloud to the employees as they worked. We’re having a little trouble understanding how this was entertaining- sounds pretty distracting, actually.

2. LUNGS; You might think lungs are just an organ in the body, but once upon a time, this was also the name of a profession. From the 14th to the 16th century, alchemist shops sold manual lungs, used for fanning fire. These works of art were beautiful, intricate, and often in very high demand. People were assigned to use these “lungs” to fan the fire during procedures executed in the alchemist shops, which often resulted in these workers suffering from blackened lungs.

3. RESSURECTIONIST; You’ll be grateful you weren’t alive in the 19th century when you hear about this creepy profession. Just like today, medical students at the time needed to practice on dead bodies, which is where the resurrectionists came in. They provided corpses to students by digging them up from their graves. The reason for this occupation’s demise is unclear, but we can safely assume that the business fell out of practice for ethical reasons. We’re just glad we weren’t around when this was common practice.

4. MUDLARKS; Those in poverty have always faced cruelty at the hands of society, and this was no exception. In the old days, working as a “mudlark” was considered a legitimate profession, scavenging through the mud seeking treasures. Indeed, the poor often took quickly to this task to support themselves and their families. Seeking valuables, people flocked to the river each and every day to comb through the mud and muck. Once they collected these items, they sold them to the public for a profit.

5. PHRENOLOGIST; the practice of attempting to determine character traits and mental states or illnesses using only the bumps and grooves of a person’s skull. This was an abstract theory within the field of psychology, but was originally considered a legitimate and masterful science. Though phrenologists were considered revolutionary and ahead of the game at the time, this practice has been widely debunked and is now considered a pseudoscience. It was later banned, and fell out of practice by they year 1967.

6. POWDER MONKEY; Young boys used to tag along with sailors who were heading off to war, back when sailing was a common occupation. Those young boys were called powder monkeys. It’s believed that “monkey” came from the phrase “monkeying around”, but there is no concrete evidence to back this claim.
The boys were tasked with transporting bags full of gunpowder from one place to another, as well as filling up the ship’s cannons with the powder to help the sailors prepare for war.

7. DAGUERREOTYPIST; The first camera to be invented that could be reliably used in public was called a daguerreotype, invented and widely used during the mid-1800’s. The people who specialized in capturing and developing photos using this camera were known as Daguerreotypists. Many important celebrities at the time, including Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, had their portraits taken by these early professionals. The process quickly became popular, until it was slowly made obsolete as cheaper and more efficient cameras and procedures were introduced.
Notable mentions; Redsmith, Leech Collectors, Herb strewer, Hobbler, Lamplighters etc. These are odd jobs those days and you can still add yours too.
