Let the two numbers be X and Y.

Therefore, X+Y=38/3...(equ 1).

X=1/3 of Y => Y=3X... (equ 2).

Substitute the value of Y into equ 1: X+3X=38/3; 4X=38/3; X=38/12=19/6.

Substitute the value of X into equ 2 to find Y: Y=3×19/6; Y=57/6=19/2

Now check: 19/2 + 19/6 = 38/3 (12/2/3); just like the first sentence of the question stated.

oh.
You fell to the error.

Read the question very well. There is meant to be a breaking punctuation (coma or full stop) between 12 and 2/3..

Read it well with coma or full stop in between, it will have meaning
Re: Mathematician In The House by Xenry: 9:32pm On Nov 03, 2021
The number one question has a typo in it.
If there's a comma after 12, then my answer is wrong; Amotolongbo's own is right.

But if that's "if" instead of "of", which I think it is, then mine is right; while Amotolongbo's own is wrong.

Op, check the correct answer, let's see what it is.

Yeah! I just realized that there's a typo in the question.

I think the typo can’t be “if” instead of “of”.

The conditional statement (“................. one of the numbers is equal to 1/3 of the other”) wouldn’t have been terminated by full stop before “Find the two numbers”. It would have been a coma instead of full stop because the statement still continues

Okay. I get it now. It would be an incomplete statement if it was ended by a period instead of a comma; that's if it's "if" instead of "of".
Yours is the correct answer .
