Now, what you knew about these phone batteries was true and it was good while it lasted. However, if you have made the switch to smartphones, then there are new rules for your battery.

Charging your phone with your laptop will not damage the Battery

It is true that A laptop would usually charge your phone slower than when you plug it into a power source.

However, the more slowly you charge a battery, the less strain that is put on lithium ions and the structures accepting them, and the less potential damage to the battery. That’s why manufacturers place limits on devices so they don’t charge too quickly.

So if anything charging slow is good for batteries.

2. Powering off a device does not preserve battery life.

When nickel-metal hydride battery was the rechargeable battery of choice. You could not get an accurate reading of the battery charge level without fully discharging and then recharging the battery.

In Lithium-ion batteries, that’s no longer the case. Modern batteries are capable of reading their state no matter their level of charge, and when your device isn’t in use the strain on the battery is almost the same as if it was off altogether, so you wouldn’t be giving the battery much of a break if you turned it off anyway.

3. Leaving your phone on charge after 100% would not hurt your battery.

Maybe you should not always leave your phone still charging when it is 100 percent full because it may cause some strain.

But this strain isn’t potential damage because the lithium battery is designed with a trickle charge mechanism. A ‘trickle charge’ mechanism cuts off the charger after the phone has reached 100 percent charge, and only tops up the battery when it drops down a little.

4. Third Party Chargers can charge your phone.

Life happens, even to your follow come charger that you guarded so jealously. And in your search for an alternative, you may want to settle for an off-brand charger for reasons best known to you. Know this – Not all off-brand chargers are bad, but not every charger is good for you.

Chargers have all sorts of controls that limit the amount of current delivered and stop it from charging when the battery is full, but some off-brand chargers might not have such rigorous safety settings. And if too much current is delivered to a battery, that could mean ripping out too many of those lithium ions and leading to battery damage. So you are better off sticking with an official model.

5. You can use your phone while it’s charging.

The fear of battery overheating is why you are popularly advised not to use your phone while it is charging. Sometimes, phone batteries come with manufacturing defects but this is rare. However, if your phone is ever excessively warm (while charging or not), get it checked out immediately.

Here’s a pro tip: If you want to use your phone while charging, have the screen on or apps refreshing in the background uses power, so it will charge at half the speed. If you want your phone to charge more quickly, put it in airplane mode or turn it off. Also, charging from a wall plug is always faster than using a computer or car charger.
