Chris Ngige, minister of labour, says the strike threatened by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will not take place.
On Monday, ASUU issued a three-week ultimatum to the federal government to implement the earlier agreement reached with the union.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview on Channels Television, Ngige said funds are available for universities.

“The strike will not happen. For one, I know that the funds to pay are there and the ministry of education has assured me that by tomorrow, they will emanate letters to make sure that the disbursement reaches the accounts of the various universities,” he said.

“We are not paying the unions directly, so it will get to the universities’ accounts.”

‘STANDARD OF EDUCATION IS FALLING‘

Speaking during the programme, the minister said the country’s standard of education is falling and that the government alone cannot fund the sector.

“The state of education here is not anything for anyone to cheer about. The standard has fallen. I agree, but education can’t be funded by the government alone,” he said.

“I know that because I schooled here in Nigeria. I did my primary education here, secondary school education here, university here in Nsukka, Enugu.
“I did my postgraduate outside the country but I can tell you very simply that in other climes, education is not only done by the government.

“In my university days, we had people who were on what they called indigent loans. If your parents can’t pay school fees, then you are called an indigent student and you get a loan —repayable loan from the loan board.

“Then you have those who are on bursary — 50-50. You also pay back something. You have people who are on scholarship.

“I enjoyed the federal government scholarship and I left it to go into my east central state scholarship which was bigger in quantum of money and was even paying for books for us.
“So, you could then see that we didn’t leave education only for the government. People were paying and they were paying a fee you can call appropriate fee at that time.”

Those who studied Sociology, Economics, political science and Anthropology in school will know the evil committed by the upper class in every given Society hence our father Karl Marx, did all he can to see if a classless society will be possible, when he kicked seriously against capitalism and opted for socialism instead.

The upper class(government) will keep on exploiting the lower class to their own advantage.

I pity the children of the poor who are in public universities. The worst is yet to come.

There's not enough attention on the education sector. The major problem is that key decision makers in the sector have their children outside the country. Once we ensure that for one to be involved in education in Nigeria either as a lecturer or government parastatal that has to do with education, the one must have their children in institutions in Nigeria and if and whenever the situation changes the one must resign, we will be rest assured that ASUU strike and government apathy will end and glory will return to education in Nigeria. The same for the health sector once health tourism is outlawed for public office holders.

That's what they will be saying. So why are they holding on to the available funds? They should pay, or is it rocket science to pay again?

In other words, Ngige is trying to tell us that the only way to qualitative education is for students to pay in millions. I can get what they are fighting ASSU for now. In your days in school, u benefitted from free education at all levels and table wants to turn when u know Ur children can never school in Nigeria. U want the students here to pay the same amount u are paying to send Ur children abroad for qualitative education. These politicians shall never end well.

The fool is talking about indigent loans and foreign education system.

What you are operating here Mr minister, you can't compare a high school outside with our universities here.

You are not talking about value to add, but money to add.

Failed leaders. Tufiakwa

You people are not serious!
25billion is being borrowed for setting up solar panel in the national assembly while you know you're owing ASUU

You people have the money, this administration just didn't rate education at all.

Heartbreaking!
