Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has given its decision on the proposed plan by the federal government to remove fuel subsidy and as well increase the pump price of petroleum by 2022.

The minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed, had announced a few days ago that the government would remove fuel subsidy which will affect cost of fuel and replace it with a monthly N5,000 transport grant to about 40 million poor Nigerians, with 2022 being the deadline.

The proposed plan to remove fuel subsidy in 2022 has been a cause of concern and has been widely condemned by well meaning Nigerians and organisations.

The Northern Elders in a statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed warned the Buhari government administration to exercise patience in taking economic and security related decisions.

They warned that an increase in fuel will worsen the desperate condition of most Nigerians.

Part of the statement reads: “The Forum invites attention to the hardship under which the vast majority of the population lives.Increasing poverty levels and widespread insecurity demand that leaders should exercise extreme caution in taking economic and security-related decisions.Increase in the price of fuel in particular will compound the already desperate condition of living of most Nigerians.

“It is important that decisions on this matter include considerations of the interests of the national economy, welfare of the citizen and reactions of a hard-pressed citizenry.”

Dis govt has removed subsidy time and time again and severally claimed not to be paying subsidy but "underRecovery" .. Now U want to remove subsidy and then spend billions if not trillions in paying "Underprivileged" Nigerians personal subsidy.. The same govt isn't considering cutting down on the cost of governance

NEF constitute a segment of the folks who mismanaged Nigeria. Their ilk are found in all the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria viz Afenifere, Ohanaeze, ACF, et al.
Way to go is-
1. Ban the use of power generators in Nigeria outside manufacturing concerns.
2. ALL public officials to use public transport. The President will be the only exception.
3. No use of siren except by ambulance services.
Nigeria will get fixed within a year or much less.

Very insensitive government, unfortunately, they are in and there is little to nothing we can do about it.

Removal of subsidy is great but you want to go ahead with it when there is no proper planning other then useless so called five thousand naira for the fed govt termed poor of the poorest, just imagine.

If you are going to go ahead with such a plan at least by now all the refineries and more should have been built, working in full capacity and everything that would keep the price low would have been done so when it's finally removed there would be a balance in cost and the people won't feel the brunt but no, you want to go ahead and remove the lever on us and let there be a free increase in cost, that is nothing but wickedness of the highest order.

After the issue of palliative during covid 19 I no rate this APC government again, na murders them be so this one self no too surprise me. At this point I am sure that they did same to gas and that's why a kg is now more expensive than gold.

Once subsidy is removed, pump price will probabaly go as high as 400-500. Then Dangote refinery will open!
Dangote is being positioned to become stinkingly richer for an endemically poor North!
I do not know why our so called Southern billionaires cannot position themselves for this kill too, by building modular refineries that can kick off in 1-2years. Then mega refineries that can be done in 4-8years!!!

It is obvious there is a fraud going on in that subsidy. Can't the secret or plain clothes detectives infiltrate the smuggling ring to bring it down and save the masses. If protests can be infiltrated, why not smugglers?

lol...... clueless buhari should have just jejely continue to pay this subsidy until he's daft sef leaves office for someone with a vision comes on board.....as usual he would be stubborn on removing it because history always repeats itself, easy money for looting for elections just like the $1 billion loan which was looted for 2019 election.
