7 Facts About Liver Disease by LeadingCare(m): 10:01am On Dec 03, 2021
1. Liver disease is the major cause of death every year.

2. Liver disease kills more people than diabetes and road deaths.

3. Liver diseases does not usually cause any obvious signs or symptoms until it's fairly advanced and the liver is damaged.

4. The most common causes of liver disease worldwide are chronic hepatitis B and C, alcohol and non alcoholic steatohepatitis associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

5. The liver is one of the hardest working organs that's responsible for hundreds of vital bodily functions.

6. Numerous liver diseases are accompanied by jaundice caused by augmented levels of bilirubin in the body. Bilirubin is the result of degradation of hemoglobin of dead red blood cells which are normally removed by the liver and excreted via bile *(we will single that in a discussion soon).*

7. When the liver has broken down harmful substances, its by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and leave the body in the form of feces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.

*A number of liver function test are available to test the proper function of the liver.*

*LIVER FUNCTION TESTS*
.....

A liver (hepatic) function panel is a blood test to check how well the liver is working.

Three things are measured in the test, it measures the blood levels of total protein, known as albumin, bilirubin, and liver enzymes. High or low levels may mean that liver damage or disease is present.

*Liver protein*

The albumin test measures how well the liver creates albumin.
Albumin is the main protein made by your liver. It performs many important bodily functions. For example, albumin:
*Stops fluid from leaking out of your blood vessels*
*Nourishes your tissues*
*Transports hormones, vitamins, and other substances throughout your body.*

*Liver enzymes*

Enzymes found in the liver and other parts of the body include alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT).

These are different enzymes made by the liver. The ALT and AST tests measure enzymes that your liver releases in response to damage or disease.

*Liver waste*

The bilirubin test measures how well it disposes of bilirubin (Bilirubin, a waste product made by the liver).

ALP can be used to evaluate the bile duct system of the liver.
