Vice-Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, has disclosed that in order to make up for the shortages of teaching staff in the institution, 300 non teaching staff were trained and converted into teaching staff.

She made the disclosure during a media parley with Journalists in Benin City.

Prof. Salami who said part of the challenges confronting the institution is lack of manpower, noted that the Federal Government has not lifted the embargo on employment but that the school has been able to train and convert 300 of its non teaching staff to teaching staff to augument the shortfall.

Honestly, there are too many redundant non-academic staff in our universities' payrolls so I think she did the right thing by putting them to good use.

Higher institutions should employ more academic staff and have them perform non-academic tasks instead, that's much more better cos not all of these non-academic staff have what it takes to tutor or lecture students in cases of lecturer shortage.
