Bullying is real especially in boarding schools. I was bullied on several occasions by some seniors but i 'll never forget the day SS3 students gave me and my classmate community beating. Gosh i thought I'd die.

It happened that my daily job(we called it function) included going to the kitchen (situated at the boys hostel)to fetch Ss3 food bowl. My classmate and i did it diligently morning, afternoon and night. Then one night we got to the kitchen to discover that the ss3 boys had eaten both their food and the food meant for the ss3 girls. We had to return empty handed with the news. They made us kneel from the dinning to their room and as soon as we entered their room they descended on us with kicks and blows and slaps. They were about 10-12 in that room and all i could do was try to shield my face so most of the blows fell on my back, arms and everywhere else. I dont know how long the beating lasted but it felt like forever.
I couldn't go for night prep that night. After they released us i just went to my bed and cried myself to sleep. Woke up with severe body pain and a resolve that when i become a senior, I'd never treat any junior badly.

You were obviously in Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene. The name you mentioned was in my set, Benue River House. Sorry for your pain and trauma bro.

EmekaStanley:
I watched with annoying disgust the video of a young boy who was wriggling in pains on a hospital bed due to the brutality meted out to him at school by his follow school mates. Story has it that he was tortured by a group of boys who were cultists. because he refused to join them.

The boy's dad said the cult boys came to his room and started beating him and stomping on him, after which they gave him a substance to drink. Eventually the boy died. This is too much to happen in a secondary school.

Bullying has been a hydra-headed beast from long ago. I also suffered while I was a boarder in a secondary school somewhere in Southern Part of Nigeria.

I had a couple of bad cases but the most painful of them all and that which has stuck in my memory was with the case of a senior student then, called Niyi Lasisi. That's his real name. I don't know if he is on this platform but if this goes viral whereby he sees it, I'd love it.

Niyi made me and a fellow roommate of mine engage ourselves in a marathon slap over a disagreement I had with the roommate. The worst of it all was that Niyi made sure that the slaps were heavy on the 'receiver' else the 'giver' will receive an extra slap as a penalty. It was brutal and arguably the most traumatic experience I had as a Junior student.

I almost quit school even though I was just a beginner but for some reason my Dad allowed me to choose if I wanted to quit or not and I chose to stay. If I see Niyi today, I'll look him straight in the eyes and tell him, "You know what Niyi, You really sucked, I don't know if you still suck now though".

My Dad visited and noticed my bad looking cheeks, he took me to my guardian who also doubled as my housemaster but that was the last I heard of anything about it.

There are many 'Niyis' in our boarding schools; Students who see nothing in deriding and brutalizing their fellow students. They go home and exhibit signs of this anti social behaviors and the parents see nothing of a big deal out of it, thereby releasing them to cause problems for others.

What manner of effrontery would warrant a set of secondary school students to damn repercussions and torture a fellow student up to the extent that the student has visible marks of torture and eventually dying as a result of it. You can imagine how deadly they'll become by the time they get to the University.

Their acts were dastardly and it speaks terribly about the culture in the school; the school might be breeding unwholesome kids for the society. It is good news that the Lagos State Government has shut down the school indefinitely.

Investigations should be carried out to determine the extent of this menace in that school and all those found culpable in the boy's death should be made to face the law squarely.

As a parent, what are you doing in order to introduce a wholesome human being in to the society? Please do not leave the moral upbringing of your child or ward in the hands of the school, you do not know what is going on in the school.

It is great to give your child the best in education but providing all their needs do not make up for their discipline and good upbringing.
Your child is your primary gift to the nation; they either contribute positively to it or they drag it in the mud and it is your responsibility as a parent to put this right.

Paying heavily for school fees is not where the job ends, you might just be paying to have a terror disturb the peace of other kids in same school...literally.

The nation is where it is today because of the family values inculcated in those who have ruled this nation from the onset till now. There is no point pointing one finger at the government for them to do things right whereas the other 4 fingers of yours are pointing back at you saying, "Okay...yeah you are right but what about your own kids, what are doing to make them better"?

You can't be complaining of a bad nation yet you are putting little or no effort in training 'nationable' kids. Your biggest national responsibility is to hand over a roundly trained citizen to the government....that's all. And who are the government? It's you, me and everyone else.

Now you as a parent, don't send your kids to school only to have some ill-mannered untrained kid bully them for you. How can you do this?
Encourage your kids to speak up and speak out no matter how threatened they may be. Ask them questions and demand answers. If you find anything suspicious, scream down the roof, shout, go to the school and make a hell of noise.

Become a lioness defending her cub.

Involve the social media, talk to the police, the lawyers or anyone that can hear you at that time. Don't go pursuing money while your child is being wrecked in school.

This nation has got to be better and it starts from the family circle. If more people put their families right, it will translate to a better nation.

That was how we went there oh. Entered principal office. Admin was there too. We sent for the teacher. He started explaining some crap and finally admitted slapping her cause he told her to do a stoop punishment and she could not handle it and got up. Omo when I heard that slap dropped, the combination of blows I unleashed on this guy, I did not plan for. If not for begging, I would have done medical report on my daughter and approached the police to charge that teacher to court for assault on a minor!
By the time I was reaching home my aburo arrived akowonjo all the way from lekki say we go the school. Lol
Finally I heard that teacher was sacked. That he was making passes at female students.
Apprently he will first intimidate the child before making a move.

Oga just read and pass quietly if you don't know what to type, I attended a boarding school in the east and it was hell for junior students, government schools in the east are breeding grounds for cultists, the other day a cult war broke out in a very popular town in the east because some secondary school students were fighting over drinks at a party, since the fight involved different cult members, senior members felt they needed to escalate the fight, it took the intervention of the army before peace was restored to the area. Cultism is a national problem, tribalism won't help us solve it.

I’d love to see the perpetrators of this evil unmasked and punished.
I know by now it’s possible their parents are already banding together to subvert the course of justice, and shield their children from the law...it’s typical of Nigerian parents, especially the privileged ones.
They always try to protect the so-called (rotten) good name of their wicked family, at the expense of another family going through grief and trauma - thanks to their poorly trained children.
I just hope this won’t be like the Deeper Life school that was mishandled through the deliberate efforts of some people.

Dem plenti oo. It's high time we profiled all the boarding schools nationwide. I still find it hard to believe that some seniors in my children's school were seen watching porn in their dormitory instead of the educating movies loaded on the external storage device connected to their VDU. Glad to know those involved had been expelled already.

I visited Day Waterman sometime ago. One of the teachers was complaining about a student who was toasting her, that he could pay her 2 times her salary, if only she could agree on dating each other.

According to the interview his father gave, they were aware that this set of seniors were bullying him cos the previous term they had confiscated his foods and clothes and asked him to describe his sister's private parts(she schooled there too). The parents heard this and laid a complaint which led to the suspension of these same guys. Obviously that didn't deter them cos now they've killed the boy.
You've got to be kidding! All these went down and the parents left him there? They'll argue nobody could have seen this coming, but it's always better to err on the side of caution. There's no point blaming the parents now. That will just add to their grief. May God console them and I pray justice is done.

Niyi is clearly in trouble.

Nice write-up, EmekaStanley.

It helps to note that teachers were uninvolved in the lives of the students, and that helped the bullying. Where there is no adult presence, children will do their worst. At least you had the strength to tell your parents. It helped.

We have all been touched by bullying. Some of us here are the bullies and others are the bullied. Remember that.
The bolded part made me remember the novel we read in senior secondary school, Lord Of The Flies by William Golding. Humans, and mainly children unsupervised can become very base and animalistic. Humans, including adults have the same tendency, but maturity and refinement helps us subdue such primordial tendencies. I was once a boarder too, in short, all of my secondary school life was spent in a boarding school. It is still the best period of my life, even now that am in my mid twenties. I can count the number of times I was bullied, maybe twice or thrice at the most. The secret is, I was quite intelligent and smart. I knew my rights, right from early age, and despite being an introvert, I was always ready to fight even my seniors if they crossed boundaries. Parents should treat their kids with love and honest friendship, no politics. Let them know they have your support at all times. Be their true friend, that when things go south, they can turn to you. Bullies are scared of those that know their right and will stand their ground. Therefore train your kids to be the biblical "wise like a serpent, harmless like a dove". When they grow, you will be grateful you did this, because even a lot of adults today are peer-pressured into so much vices, like the drugs and rituals epidermic ravaging Nigeria today.

I went to one of the best boarding houses in Lagos. Not in the outskirts of Lagos but city centre. Jss2 - SSS3 and I have vowed never to let my kids go to boarding house. Was I bullied? No Was I abused? No. I was almost a king or the special one in the boarding house but that is me. The atrocities, cruelty or condition and simply life in the boarding house is crazy. I wont go into all the details. Homosexuality voluntary and forced. Attempted murder - mates gang up with knives to kill a junior because he is stronger. Brutality etc
In my street way back we heard a house was in mourning. A good and hard working young man who was the son in that house had been cut to pieces in LASU on the night of Miss Lasu. He had just been anointed to be next head of a cult group on the campus.
If you see some of these guyz committing such atrocities some have baby face some look gentle some you can swear on your life they cant kill anyone. But if you have read Lord of the Flies .. you will understand.
The world is evil as it is. Nigeria is a country those paid to work dont want to work. Or complain about the pay they agreed to take to do the work . This leads to all sorts of atrocities
There is something my kids say. What happens in school stays in School. Yes young people know how to keep secrets. To run a boarding house should have penalties if they let down the children or parents. Even day school students need to be protected. Being a day school student can equally be bad but not as bad as boarding.

Very sad.

Really, parenting is not easy. The truth is, we can tell our kids all we want (or even worse, flog them all we want), they'd still learn from our actions. How can we teach our kids to respect and be empathetic toward others if we, as adults, derive so much pleasure in bullying others too? The high rate of cyber bullying today suggests that many people still have the bullying desire in them but just can't act on it with reckless abandon anymore. There's no telling what these faceless people do or say to others when no one is watching.

My point is, our kids will reflect us, thier teachers and/or their friends. Seeing that thier teachers are adults and thier friends will reflect thier own parents who are adults too, I believe it's safe to say our actions are adults shape the personalities of our kids more than anything we could ever say to them. This invariably implies that raising good kids entails being the best versions of ourselves as adults. Parenting is indeed not easy.

Like this a lot. Most children don't know that can fight back via adult authority when they find themselves in this situation. Teachers need to be on hand and observant, too.

Parents should treat their kids with love and honest friendship, no politics. Let them know they have your support at all times. Be their true friend, that when things go south, they can turn to you.
