Much as we all agree that Military rule was counter-productive for Nigeria, some Military Heads of State stood out in terms of performance and personal attributes.

For me, Gowon came out for humbly accepting his overthrow and earning a degree thereafter. He also supervised the Civil war with resounding success and forgave all secessionists.

Who is your own best Military ruler?

Something is "wrong" with your title!

Ask us, "who is Nigeria's least military dictator"?

We must not be seen to promote illegality. Why ask such a silly question. A man carries a gun he is meant to defend the state and now turns that weapon on the people grasping power by force and yet we are asking whom amongst these brigands  is the best are we for real.  undecided

If the poster answers this simple question of whom was Nigeria’s greatest armed robber, then I would be able to give him or her an insight of who the greatest mutineer was.

Even though nothing is good about any military government, so no military government can be said to be good, better or best.  However I very much admire how Gowon handled the state of affairs in Nigeria during his government. He treated undergraduates as elites.  He gave them the best food for almost free of charge and all other fees were almost free.  When I entered the university (UNN) in 1977, I paid only 50 kobo for my three meals in a day, IE breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The quality of food we ate in those days were even better that what was served in 5 star hotels.  There was no need for any student to even buy any provisions as there was enough tea and beverages in the cafeterias and students were free to take as much as they liked with their flasks.  Sundays were special because every student had one quarter of a whole chiken served with ice cream etc.  Breakfast and lunch were no exceptions and life as an undergraduate was like living in paradise.  There was burseries, scholarships and vacation jobs for everybody, infact I did more than one vacation job every long vacation and I was swimming in good money including the money my dad gave me.  I was able to save money for my first car, which I bought after my NYSC orientation while I was an undergraduate.  In addition, I was able to buy all the things that made us feel like great students during my time such as a complete musical set and giant refrigerator, while I resisted the temptation of buying a car while still in the university as that could distract me from my studies.

I must tell you that life was sweetest in Nigeria under the regime of Gowon and I did not want to live abroad or school abroad for any reason because I would be missing the good time in Nigeria.  Things only began to fall apart after Gowon's regime.  Gowon has great passion for education, peace and unity for Nigeria more than any other past rulers so I think that Gowon was my best military ruler.

We all know military rule was an aberration but not all Military Heads of State were bad. Some of them executed programmes that worked for us.
Besides, our national life was dominated more by juntas. So, we are only assessing and comparing what each regime did well for Nigeria.

This is by no means an endorsement of the aberration, which is no more fashionable anyway.

Murtala/OBJ I think were the best.
Murtala was revolutionary, he attacked the issues from the ground up, and tried to clean house. No surprise he was quickly wasted.
OBJ is the next best. In his 3 years, he nationalized a lot of MNCs, instituted the indigenization decree, and handed over to civilians, becoming the first military dude in Africa back then to quit the stage voluntarily.

Even in his stint as a civilian prez, we all can point to what he achieved with telecoms, he started the local content drive in the petroleum industry, and he built up excess crude account and external reserves, and he was able to achieve significant debt write-down.

He even brought in smart people like Ngozi Iweala and C.Soludo, and gave them reasonably free rein to run their shops (after a fashion, cos they all fell out eventually grin). But we must say he did good overall.

So who did he bring in as a military ruler and gave free rein to perform? You compare him as a military and as a civilian ruler. That is unfair to other military rulers who did not have the opportunity to rule in a democracy (so we can also judge them, like you have done Obj, under both regimes). You see my point? Restrict yourself to his ''bestness'' as a military ruler and do not try to obfuscate matters. Thanks

easily OBJ or Gowon, but for the monsterous feat of holding the country together and how well he handled the post civil war era i would go with Gowon.

this is a legit question and anyone lambasting the OP lacks the ability of critical thought and assessment.

yeah, those guys weren't bad, but they couldn't keep the complex polity together. They ended up being eased out of power.
That's also why I don't rate Gowon.

OBJ. Many reasons but majorly for handing over to civilian rule.

If it's about handing over,i'll give it to Abdusallam Abubakar.
If it's about trying to push common sense and discipline into our lives,Idiagbon will forever rest in peace.
