A company like MAFAB with no active network in my opinion should not have participated in this 5G bid. Makes no sense. But Pantami and Co will always do nonsense for selfish and parochial reasons. 11 Likes |

Can you imagine? A company using ordinary 'YAHOO.CO.UK' email address but buoyant enough to bid up to USD273M! Something is fishy here. I rest my case 12 Likes |

dgitrader: I had to do my own findings too as your question puzzled me too. I realised that the company was just set up for the purpose of winning this bid when the talk of 5G was raising concerns during lock down last year. Another question, going by the kinds of businesses that the owner run, how was the owner able to raise over a 100 billion naira for the bid? I had to even do a Google map check on the address of the company. I found that the address is not actively being used by any company. On the cac portal, you will discover that mafab is a family business... The same phone number was left for all the directors (the husband, daughter and wife I guess) and the same address. I believe mafab is a front/proxy for some people who don't want their involvement to be known to the public. I mean the parent company is not even an oil company that can raise such a huge sum of money. Some bank owners/directors, politicians may be involved in this deal and I believe the government are in on it. More investigations need to be done. My concern now is that the company may not be able to efficiently deploy the 3G as I'm afraid they lack the experience and expertise. I think their aim is to get the licence and then sell to other stakeholders at a profit (that's the kind of investment the abovementioned persons get involved in after all). The company's (mafab) website is even down... If they can't keep their website alive, how are they going to manage our 3G well? Enough said for now. 9 Likes |

First and foremost, i think Mafab Comms did their homework well and hitting the home run became a cakewalk (no pun intended). The question we should ask is who is behind Mafab Comms. Dr Musbahu Bashir. What are his antecedents?. He is not a greenhorn in telecoms business. In fact, he is a very shrewd business guru who is on the board of Jaiz Bank, an Oil export pre-shipment and inspection company amongst other businesses. Throwing big money behind such a person is not a big deal. The good news is that Mafab Comms will open up a new vista of opportunities in the telecoms ecosystem. One thing i understand about private equity/investment is that before they support any big deal, they take a painstaking look at the CEO's leadership qualities, his integrity threshold, his hunger for success and most importantly his team (if they can deliver). Since it is a wholly Nigerian company ( i think), maybe we should wait and see what they have in store for us all. PS: To get full insight into how telecoms auction works, i suggest you read Mallam Nasir El-Rufai's Accidental Public Servant where he gave a rich and deep insight into Privatization, Public Private Partnership (PPP), Telecoms Auctions, Infrastructure financing and Contracting etc. In that book, he also mentioned that his older brother, who is a Telecoms Engineer worked in IT/Telecoms and was/is a big fish in that space. |
