Absolutely nothing will make me travel by air within Nigeria, nothing.

It's not that bad though... we have one of the safest Air Transport industries worldwide. Obviously, there's the debate of flight frequency in Nigeria and Murphy's law, but notwithstanding the Commercial side of Aviation in Nigeria is pretty safe. We have not had any fatal incident since Dana (Flight 992) of 2012.

What this OP/Passenger experienced and narrated is a tip of the iceberg. As for me, nothing and absolutely nothing would make me travel by air in Nigeria. I'm frequent flyer in Europe. Each time an aeroplane is about to take off, trust me, the tank is routinely filled. Anything could happen which forces the aeroplane to remain airborne more than the anticipated. If that happened to the aircraft in the OP's narrative, it could have crashed due to insufficient aviation fuel. More than once, I was airborne, and due to fog, the pilot couldn't successfully negotiate a landing. After 3 attempts, the flight was re-routed to another airport in another city. On another occasion, due to an emergency incident at the airport we were supposed to be landing, minutes prior to landing, the flight was also rerouted to another city and airport. Besides, the maintenance culture in Nigeria is horrendously criminal.

Lol egbon you have been away for too long. In nine years, we have recorded ZERO fatal incidents/mishaps. The industry is very safe.

Also, as stated earlier, the Pilots decided to top up fuel to forestall eventualities like you listed. I'd say that is very professional of them.

Ps, I am the OP.

I saw the above post recently and it reminded me of similar experience I had just last month.

Here goes...

Lol... What a hair-raising flight!

I had an annoying Nigeria Airways
Airbus A310 flight delay in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire enroute Lagos, back in 1987, and a couple of severe air turbulences over the years though. Glad to still be alive after all is said and done. grin
