I don't know if cinematography covers everything to know about camera, or each of them has their different attributes....

Begin with photography, then in two months time you enroll for video editing and cinematography.

Go for the one that has a higher Topography.

Will suggest videography. As long you can afford a decent mirrowless camera (expensive) with a wide angle lens, a gimbal "Dj ronin" or zhiyun crane lab, or a cheap canon t71 (700d) "cheaper" zhiyun weebill s and learn the gimbal walk and with persistence u will get a cinematic footages that will wow your client.

Any of them is great. They are related but different.

If you begin with Photography, you will gain expertise with cameras. This, obviously, is helpful for cinematography especially as you are likely to use the same kinds of cameras at the start. A lot of Nigerian movies are shot with DSLRs which are also the cameras mostly used for photos.

At Twim Institute, we offer a Media Arts course that provides a foundation for both. The idea is that at the point of starting out, you may not know what you want. As you get into the industry, you will be in a better position to determine what you should focus on. Some of our students, for instance, started with photography and later discovered that there were better work opportunities for them in video-related industries. They switched but are still able to fall back to photography whenever income opportunities from it arise.

In summary, at the start, it might be a good idea to be a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. Try out different things and ultimately determine what works best for you.

Cinematography covers everything about camera, but the rules differ.
If you enjoy stills go for a photography and retouching class.
If you see yourself in the acting, directing, movie and music video space, go with cinematography. Some photographers are adding/switching to cinematography because of the high demand in video content right now.
