I had a discussion with a friend. He insisted that a manual car will win an automatic in a dash 100m race. I think not.

Car gurus, what do you think?

Na wa for what u guys worry about. But if I may contribute, I should think the automatic would carry the day. All the little little time it will take a manual car during switching gears automatic car would have moved past it.

Manual will win or auto with paddle shifters

Manual all the way if driven by a good driver.
You have control on how fast you want manual to go, but for automatic you are depending on the throttle and electronic change. More reason many Car Racing uses manual driven vehicles.

Note: Sorry, I will not buy manual or drive one anymore because I love comfort and possibly hand-free easy driving.

This is a myth. Has been disproved several times. Besides, the major motorsport events ditched manual transmissions years ago apart from Nascar. They all use semi automatic transmissions with paddle shifters now.

Lol, you're still stuck in 2005. Automatic transmissions have moved past those 5 speeds you have in mind.

Again, depends on the specific transmissions. A 7 speed semi automatic transmission with paddle shifters will beat any manual transmission hands down, other factors remaining constant.

Car gurus, what do you think?

You're describing a drag race.

Drag races happen to be one of the racing categories where automatics and semi automatic transmissions will beat stick shift manual transmissions, other factors remaining constant.

For every day cars yes a manual transmission would accelerate faster than the automatic hence since they have same spec the manual would hit the jackpot first. Eg 1.8L 2007 Toyota Corolla manual vs Automatic.

For special sport cars, the winner would be determined by driver behind the wheel and external condition of the environment/race track so far both vehicles have same specs eg 2009 G37 or 2009 IS350 as the automatic transmission of this specs have paddle shifters so you can shift gears successively like a manual transmission not necessarily waiting for TCU to do it for you

Then paddle shifters do have grade too, some are just for design purpose, they do work but not as responsive as what you did expect. Let's not dabble too much into unchartered waters grin

Yes. A 100m drag race.

I have watched too many videos where a manual will hardly ever win from zero.

On a rolling race, maybe, but from from zero Automatic will always certainly win no matter how the manual driver is experienced.

The problem with launching a manual from zero is wheel spin which means loss of traction and speed. An auto transmission can deal with full throttle from zero without losing traction or too much wheel spin but a manual will not.

Watch this to get the idea

A BMW M2 is not your normal everyday ride. And the cars in question is even a 2019. By 2008 or there about manual transmission stopped having better acceleration time than an automatic transmission because of improved research.

Look at the BMWs in the 90s to early 2000, the manual always have a better launch time than the auto but fast forward in 2017 the example I got, the auto definitely is faster than the manual

Are we now differentiating street cars vs sport cars? Is it not better if we just generalize?

I am not talking of specific cars or year, thats why i said watch this for an idea of what happens if you put exactly the same car with same specs comparing manual vs auto.

The facts are that manual will always experience more wheel spin and secondly the auto changes gear faster everytime giving the advantage to auto.

Yes, older autos do come with some loss in power but like you pointed out, its in the past. Manufacturers have been killing the manual option in recent years because the cannot make them better but autos keep getting better.
