Hi Nairalanders,

I'm a graduate of Accounting with a Second Class Upper Honours degree and I've been making use of job sites on the internet for job hunting since I graduated with nothing positive to show for it.

I must confess however that the major factor mitigation my success in pursuit of a job is the age requirement placed on job vacancy adverts that ordinarily I'm qualified for.

Another factor I believe is highly responsible is the fact that I reside in Edo State where I'm from and as such I'm far away from those small Accounting jobs as I am unable to attend interviews given that I have no place to stay/squat in Lagos.

I was recently offered a job as a housekeeper in a hotel in Lagos with just one day off with a salary of #20k.

Should I take up this job as it will afford me the opportunity to be closer to finding other opportunities inside Lagos? Remember there is only one free day off.

Or should I remain in Edo State and continue searching for a job that suits my qualification. Note: I've been at this since 2018

Thank you fellow Nairalanders.

I believe that just as two heads are better than one, so also, many heads are much more better than one.

You can take up the job. It could be a stepping stone to succeeding in better job opportunities.

Is the hotel providing accommodation for you?

If they don’t offer accommodation, don’t accept it.
It is too poor.
You can’t survive on a 20k salary in Lagos.

Does it mean all through your years in school you never made friends who are now based in Lagos you could put up with?

The N20k job wouldn't afford you the opportunity to search for better jobs.

As an accountant in my former life, i will advice that you go to Lagos and take up the 20k job if accomodation is part of the deal.
Try as much as possible to get a job in an accounting firm no matter how poor the pay.

I printed copies of my resume and hiked on Ikorodu road dropping off my documents at more than 30 audit firms.

I waka for more than 2 hours for hot sun that day and it paid off.
A month after the exercise, i got a wonderful offer that changed my life from an audit firm. The pay was N5000 per month.

It is going to be initially rough but don't ever give. Keep on trying and giving your best.

After giving your best, then fast and pray for God to make your best fruitful.

20k to survive in a month? Only one day off and I'm sure it's Sunday, no accomodation.

Don't take it.

Instead apply for a teaching job in a boarding school. They're plenty in lagos, they'll pay you for teaching and as one of the hostel masters. You should earn between 50-80k for an average school. And you will even learn from mentoring those adolescent kids.

While there, apply online for accounting jobs, submit cvs etc. Once vacation begins, bounce into the streets for interviews. You can even go for interviews while school is in session, just give a tangible excuse. Don't tell them you're going for interview o. Dem fit sack you before you hear interview result

Go to gig job websites, get a bunch of accounts, and do contract jobs in accounting.

The questions is do you have another job that will pay you above the current pay. Remember you are a man.
