Sub-standard organization of Nigeria. Yes! That is the name that befits the moribund agency: sub-standard. The most useless of Nigerian agencies.

Established to ensure that standard of products isn't compromised, SON has not only failed at its primary task, it has also been useless wasting public funds remunerating workers who are ineffective.

The ineffectiveness of SON has endeared dare-devil producers to infiltrate the Nigerian market with mediocre goods/products accompanied by a very annoying increase in price. A visit to any Nigerian market will give a clear-cut visible evidence of the damages caused by lack of oversight from SON. Situations in Nigerian markets defile reasonable economic explanation as you will be left confused on what is exactly going on.

Inflation has always been alluded to two major causes— cost-push and demand-pull. Here in Nigeria, one does not know which of the two is exactly at play. Prices of products keep soaring as if being threatened by spiritual forces, while accompanying standards of the products keep falling like snow in the winter. Yet, the government of the day feels everything is okay, since, if Aso Rock can afford it, then, every Nigerian can afford it.

Nigerian lower denominations of currency have been rendered useless. Even biscuits for kids no longer sell for #10. The ones of #20 are for toothless infants, while kids who really want to enjoy biscuits will cause their parents or a cheerful giver to dish out, at least, #50. Now, this is where the problem is; this #50 biscuit is the same one sold for #10 just some months ago with more contents and better quality.

Soft drinks are becoming watery. Soaps are losing lather. Sardines now have malnourished fish. Spare parts are no longer durable. Plastic chairs are breaking effortlessly. Cement no longer cements. Yet, all these are now sold at high prices. Shouldn't quality improve or be maintained as prices increase? What exactly is the function of the Standard Organization of Nigeria?
