The Power Of Your Vision [Part of Our Power Series]

Building Your Visionary Power.

Today, we will talk about the power of your vision – that burning zeal of creativity you want to show to the world. I was surfing the Internet today, when the news of Sidney Poitier’s death broke out. Poitier was a Bahamian-American actor, film director, activist, and ambassador. In 1964, he was the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. A lot of people celebrated him as an outstanding actor, who received two Academy Awards nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, and a lot of other outstanding nominations to his credit. From 1997 to 2007, he was the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. However, little was said and known of struggles and persistence in pursuing his vision as an actor.

At the early stages of his acting career, Poitier joined the American Negro Theater but was rejected by audiences. Contrary to what was expected of Black actors at the time, Poitier’s tone deafness made him unable to sing. Determined to refine his acting skills and rid himself of his noticeable Bahamian accent; he spent the next six months dedicating himself to achieving theatrical success. What was the result? He became an outstanding actor with several leading roles. In 1958 he starred alongside Tony Curtis in “The Defiant Ones.” The film was an instant success; landing eight Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor nominations for both stars, making Poitier the first Black male actor to be nominated for a competitive Academy Award as best actor. This indeed is the power of a focused mind and a clear vision.

When Alexander III of Macedon succeeded his father King Philip II to the throne at the age of 20, little did historians know that he would later be remembered as Alexander The Great -- history’s greatest and most successful military commander. He conducted a lengthy military campaign throughout Western Asia and Northeastern Africa. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India.

After achieving his father’s wish – the pan-Hellenic project; he had this one burning desire: to reach the ends of the world and the Great outer Sea. That is vision! Your vision is that burning desire within you to take an interesting adventure on the things you have great passion for. The starting point of every achievement is a strong desire. Whatever thing you want to do, if you don’t have the desire to see it to completion; you will never accomplish it. It is one thing to have a dream or idea; it is another thing to take a bold action towards achieving them. A clear vision will help you to get to your success faster than you expect. Personally, when starting up a project, I’d ask myself three questions: “Why am I starting this?”[b], [b]“Where will I end this?”, and “What steps will I take to actualize it?” The first question is very important. Before starting up a project, you should first ask yourself the reason for starting it. What motivated you to start it? Are there vital needs that you believe would never be met unless you act? Are there personal, societal, or financial reasons behind it? Will doing this push up your ego and pride in the society, or will it make you feel humbled that you have rendered a selfless service to the society? You alone can give a befitting answer to those questions. Secondly, you need to ask yourself where you’re ending it. You need to have a limit to whatever course or project you’re undertaking else you’ll never finish it. One of the key attributes of visionary leaders is that their visions outlive them. Visionary leaders are aware of their limit, thus, they groom others who would take up the vision from where they stopped.

Finally, you need to determine for yourself the necessary steps you will take to bring your idea to completion. These steps are what we referred to as goals. For example, if your idea will take six years to become meaningful, you won’t just expect that someday you will wake up from a long sleep; and realize that your dreams have been actualized without any effort from you. You will need to work towards your ideas. Set realistic goals – which should be daily, monthly, and yearly. This helps you to harmonize your inner strength and will-power to focus on things that matter. Let’s go back to the story of late Sidney Poitier. On his first ever role as an actor; had he taken the rejection meted out to him by audiences to heart, he would have faded into oblivion. But no, he would have none of that. He was determined within himself to refine his acting skills. He had a purpose. He had a vision – to be one of the best acting stars in America’s film industry; and he was not going to settle for less. Did he later actualize it? Yes. He went down in history as the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Truly, you are only limited by the power of your vision.

Why should you build your visionary power? I may not be able to answer that for you. But I believe that when you build the power of your vision; it enables you to weed out trivial distractions in your life, and make you achieve your ideas faster with a clear focused mindset.
