If a person calls himself or herself a Christian, but does not follow (nor even understand) basic principles of Christianity, what's the point?

Anyone can claim to be of any faith they choose, but unless that religion meaningfully informs and influences that person's life,

it's hard to see the value in claiming to follow that faith.

In my experience, Nigerians are just as ignorant if not more. I remember having one long, tedious argument with one pastor who seemed to believe that the donkey was the olden days version of the stretch limousine. And that Jesus riding one into Jerusalem showed that pastors should ride around in big cars and live luxurious lifestyles. The scary thing is that the guy didn't seem to be trying to deceive me. He actually, truly believed that. That's just one of the funnier examples of pastoral ignorance I've encountered.

I think that the problem is that too many christians (and muslims, etc) are already convinced that they know the scriptures, so they never actually bother to learn anything. Also pastors do their best to discourage people form actually reading the bible. They insist on breaking everything into tiny 1 or 2 verse portions taken out of context. I guess it makes it easier to twist the meaning or to hide their own ignorance.

Nigeria is a good example of Christian-Atheists We have over 40 million Christians as of 2009 and we are 3rd Largest Christian Population in the entire world, you would think for a large number of Christians, God will at least appreciate and go into action answering long sought-after prayers of Good Leadership, Non-Violence and Death to Witches and Wizards, yet we are plagued by all ills. I think Christians should look inwards and truly determine whether they are actually the Salt of the Earth of Lukewarm spit from God's mouth.

Spot on ----- There's this favorite verse for all prosperity preachers in Job 22 vs 24 "Then shall you lay up gold as dust, " interpreted to mean you will be blessed beyond measure if you serve God; But if you check other versions of the bible (The Living Bible, Good News, NASB, basically other versions aside KJV), it actually says you should place your gold in the dust i.e discard them/ do away with them. So like you said, they are happy to take verses out of context and input their own meaning. And no one to correct them because their followers don't read their bibles but lap up to what the pastor says.

No one will blame the atheist for his or her belief. Is it not true that those of us that claim to know or serve God/Allah/Budha/Ifa etc do so while copying what other people have done in the times past and make belief that that is the way to go?. We listen to what delights us all whenever we attend religious centers while discarding the real substance. This is not to forget the misleading interpretation of the holy books by different quarters, by which time most of us have been made "morons" in the name of religion. In actual fact, I have always called the "atheist" a "free thinker" for which it is possible that the omnipotent and most high being tends to dwell with more than those psychos pushing us to the brink in order to sap us all of knowledge.

The atheist does believe in a supernatural entity, that which we call God but will not come under any canopy to be brain-washed or better still mix his feelings with mere mortals for our ways are not pure. Little wonder in the bible, it was recorded that God made all men to speak in different languages when the tower of Babylon was our resolve.
