Old one looks like an amusement park. A great logo is very simple and memorable. A dummie can remember and sketch without looking.

Can you please throw more light on this

Less ink is used. Only two colors needed - blue and yellow.

For the old logo, they need at least, 3 colors (if they are printing on white surface) and more inks because the oval shape is bolder and bigger compared to just a thin line of oval they are using in the new logo.

More so, the old logo has another thick square of blue color, which has been eliminated in the newly introduced logo.

With this new logo, they would save hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, in graphic designs, artworks and printings. They would only pay regulatory fee for change of artwork, which is one-off.

In our backyard in Nigeria, you would discover Sprite now sells in white PET bottle with very simple sleeve design instead of the old green PET bottle and colored sleeve design of yellow and green. It to save cost as well. Sprite content has always been of white color. Why was is it then been marketed in green bottle? They wanted us to see it as a natural ‘green’ unripe orange drink. Buying colored resin (material that is being used for plastic) is expensive than buying white one. That’s one of the reasons the bottle of Sprite was changed from green to white. But everybody is not aware.

With high cost of production across sectors, technical managers, marketers, business planners, accountants, analysts, quality control specialists, researchers etc have to do what is called value re-engineering of products and services so as to eliminate non-value-adding features of a product or services, and see where costs can be avoided completely or minimized to enhance profits, especially in markets/countries where disposable incomes are low.

At a point in the past, a popular airline hostess suggested, in one of their value re-engineering meeting, that it was good they stop providing coffee/tea cup lids that were being served aboard their flights because many passengers only collected their drinks and flung lids away instantly. So they were wasting money producing tea cup covers that passengers were not using. The airline’s management took this suggestion and coffee and tea cup lids productions were stopped. They were able to save hundreds of thousands of Pounds

Volkswagen and BMW just changed their logos from 3D to simple 2D. 3D printings eats up more ink than 2D. They were done to minimize costs.
One can go on and on to mention many products and services that have passed through this process and are still passing through it.

A lot of products and services in Nigeria have gone through this similar exercises but which consumers would think they were done because of them. No. It’s was done to increase the bottom line of their Profit or Loss Account.

Now that MTN is going Plc across Africa, we should expect more of this re-engineering on their products and services.

A year from now we won't even remember the old logo. I think once the rebranding gets into full swing with new store looks and merchandising you'll appreciate it more.

The old one is better...they should sack the entire branding team for recommending nonsense to management.

To be honest, that logo is beginning to grow on me real quick.

What are logo designers called then?

Logo designers or brand identity designers.

See, a logo designer might not even know how to use a design software. 90% of a logo design is not done on Adobe Illustrator, or CorelDraw.

As a logo designer, after doing 90% of the work, I can them contract a graphic designer to design my raw ideas.

Mind you, you can be both. Just like I am.

Chai! You are giving me ideas o. grin
I might even consider becoming one. At least, let me explore that fairly artistic side of me. cheesy
D
Since you say a good logo should not have to be complicated. And I like simple drawings too. cheesy I mean, that MTN’s new logo was practically drawn with a yellow and black crayons.
And there are never errors in art. Hehehehehehehehehe cheesy

So, how do you promote your work?
