why the sudden change in attitude immediately anyone joins the Nigerian police?
please, this might be a little lengthy,
Have you ever noticed nor experienced a drastic change in the attitude of someone you used to know that joined the Nigerian police? (please, this is not in any way an attempt to discredit the Nigerian Police Force),

I asked the above question based on what happened at a police station on Friday and ever since the incidence occured, I haven't been myself and I keep on wondering why the system has to be programmed to function that way.

So what happened? why was I at the police station on Friday?
Let me put it this way,
Towards the end of last month (January), a young man of about 23/24 years old, which I shared the same compound/house but different flats with his parents, had a serious altercation with his father which lead to a serious exchange of blows when his father compared him with a notorious yahoo boy in the area, a week later, the angry father arrested and dumped his son in the police cell with a warning never to let anyone get him out of the cell, not even his mom nor his uncles, the boy has been in the cell since 8 of February. According to the mother, the father is not showing any change in his decision, he keeps hardening his heart which made the poor woman to plead with me to have a discussion with her husband to see if I can convince him to have a change of decision.

I met the man and we discussed at length, I was able to convince him to have a change of decision by making him see numerous reasons why he shouldn't abandon his child in the police cell but pride couldn't let him go to the station, he was like "I can't go back to what I vomited" he then asked me to go to the station with his wife.

on getting to the station, the IPO in charge of the boy's case was an old time girl friend of my course mate then at Unizik.
during those days, while I was still a bachelor, she visits and makes a total cleanup of the room, she wash, cook and does all manner of house chores. She was very humble, obedient, caring and down to Earth, I liked her dearly for all these features but bro code kept me away from her, she's beautiful as well.

Immediately I saw her, I was smart enough to recognize her and called her by her name, she wash shocked and she was as well smart enough to recognize me ( you could imagine the kind of joy that engulfed my heart, for my mind, the case has been closed and forgotten) and we greeted ourselves as old time friends we used to be.

I quickly told her what brought us to the station but her response changed my mood instantly, she was like "that criminal that fought his father?" I responded "Yes" but his father sent us to the station to initiate the bailout processes with you. She scolded at me like a wounded lion, she threatened to command one of her male colleague to shoot at me if I don't get away from her, I pleaded with her, reminding her of all the good times we spent together but all my pleas felled on deaf ears and she threatened me one more time that she would be left with no other option than to put me and the woman in the cell if we didn't move away from the police premises.
I had no other option than to take to my heels, we went back to the man and told him what transpired at the station. He went by himself yesterday and initiated the bailout processes and the boy was bailed out.

My experience with her wasn't my first experience with the police officers but what interests me the most is because I knew this lady too well, I've encountered many wicked officers in the past and keep on hearing the oppression by the police officers from the civilians. I can't stop being surprised each time I remember what happened at the police station. I'm even planning to go back to the station to meet her one-on-one after everything subside. I don't know the reasons for her action but I believe it was because of the instructions given to them by the Man. But she over did it, she overreacted.

what is the rationale behind the sudden change in attitude immediately anyone joins the Nigerian police?
Is there any explanation to it? I want to know.

I think it's about the environment they found themselves...

Most of the time, the politicians give them tasks that can only tarnish their image but they have to carry them out for fear of losing their job!

@DamnNiggarr

You don't need to go back to the station to meet her. It is what it is. Also, it doesn't apply to the police force alone. People generally tend to change when you haven't been in contact for long, some change for good, some for worse. I have my own examples too...

You also need to realize that a lot of Nigerians get easily power drunken, especially women in positions. That's why a lot of people hate female bosses. A male officer would have been more respectful in his manners, even if he wouldn't grant your request.

What sudden change? undecided

So you used to know her a certain way from her past.... why associate the change to her current profession when you don't know this for sure. For all we know her experience with your college flatmate may have been the beginning of the change for her. undecided

shocked
Just look at how he shouted "A very fat lie" as if he was there with me. And where in my write-up was it stated that she ordered to shoot me? It was just a threat and her tactics to scare me off.
Well, I may have doubted it if it was another person's experience but it happened in one of the police stations in Anambra State.
this is one problem with Nigerians shocked
They wouldn't agree till they experience it.
That you have not experienced it doesn't mean that they don't happen.
But you may not be lucky enough while experiencing it.
Pray that you don't find yourself in a situation where you will be left at the mercy of the police officers, even your wife who's a police officer will take sides with her colleagues thereby try to extort from you. Bro ask questions,
Na Nigerian you dey o! Not U.S of A

@Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I was in the village for something and emblem people seized the Japan Mate that I use in the village.

How much? The guy said N1500. They sell the emblem at N100 but because I was caught without it, the price skyrocketed to N1500. I said ok, take 1k and keep the emblem. I don't need it.

The reason is that I don't visit the village twice in a year(unless something serious comes up) so by the time I will be there again, the emblem would have become useless.

Dude refused. Said N1500 or they take me to their office and chain the Mate. Dude became violent and threatened to break my head, Omoh nah so I joined in the madness. You can threaten me anywhere but not where I grew up.

Small boy fah.

Las las I ended up in their office and the Mate was chained as he promised but I noticed that the person in charge was my deputy in secondary school. I walked up to her with a smile on my face but she shunned me like I have a communicable disease.

The thing vex me so I made a call and the person on the other end told me to give the phone to whoever is there but nobody agreed to take the phone.

He told me to wait that he was coming. Fear gripped all of them when he showed up and I am sure they wondered how a guy like me can get a man like him to leave what he was doing and come to their office.

Long story short, the man ordered them to unchain not just my mate but all the other chained motorcycles and their owners went home with them. Everyone present collected free rate and emblem.

There are jobs that change people from good to bad.

the police are trained that way. Example any body they brought to their station is a criminal. They use derogatory words like this criminal or cultist. All of this is kinda of intimidation and to put fear on the person just same way dog barks to put fear.

It's part of the training. If they don't do that people will not remit better money.

Why do we always try to use this line when most of our experiences with police officers are nothing to write home about.
As far as I am concerned the Nigerian police force is a discredited institution.

Don't hype a lady that isn't married as nice, they can pretend to be anything, trust me, it's in our DNA.

Do u know why she didn't marry your friend How are u sure, u weren't part of the reason your friend broke up with her, according to your friend's story.remember the way guys lie to cover up their mess.

If it makes you feel better (it likely won't), it's the same crap all over the world - the police is utterly useless, a bunch of overly paid wannabe-thugs that run away like scared chickens at the first sight of a real criminal.

Here in Italy we have the civilian police ("Polizia") and the military police ("Carabinieri", who are also fully-fledged soldiers), with both working through the national territory - there is a reason why if you want anything done or need help you call the soldiers and not the useless civilian police, however many jokes Italians might poke at the Carabinieri.

Let's not even start with police in America and the rest of the Western world. I think that very few people join the police to "make a difference" - they accept anybody essentially, and then are surprised when their new members are little more than thugs with a gun.
