I did a review of the XTOOL D7 scanner which is the first bidirectional scanner (aka active scan tool) I know with a 7" display, and yet retails for under $500!

I've had over 2weeks of hands on time and it's looking good. If you are in the market for a bidirectional scanner and you're on a budget, you can add the D7 to the list of scanners to consider before pulling the trigger cheesy

When buying a scanner, especially if you want to keep up with newer vehicles, you should also consider cost of updates. This has 3 years of free updates and it's $99 per year for subscriptions thereafter.

It's definitely not perfect and not for everyone, however, I thought to share, in case you are in the market for a scanner with $500ish as your max budget.

Getting a scan tool is a balance of:
1. Required functions
2. Budget
3. Frequency of updates/availability of functions when out of subscription

Yes boss.
It still boils down to...
Piyke:

Getting a scan tool is a balance of:
1. Required functions
2. Budget
3. Frequency of updates/availability of functions when out of subscription

The tools are at different levels. Incrementally:
1. D8 - advanced ECU coding
2. A80 - improved hardware retains advanced ECU coding
3. X100 pad 3 - tuned towards advanced key programming with add-on accessories.
4. A80pro - adds J-2534 ECU flashing but does not have the same level of key programming prowess of pad 3.

So it really depends on what you want to use it for and your budget. A80pro is the most expensive.

NB: Remember to specifically check brand compatibility to ensure it covers what you really need. e.g., the A80pro flashes some BENZ ECU's but doesn't flash Honda ECU's at all.
