CAN A NOVICE KEEP BROILERS

Poultry involves different breeds and specie they are however kept for different purposes ranging from meat production, egg production and for security purposes.

Although some people keep them much longer they however produce juicy meat when reared for a short period of time. its meat is packed with nutrients it’s considered a white meat and said to be safe for health compared to red meat. Broiler production is quite economical therefore can be raised commercially. To ensure profitability and sustainability, the following factors need to be considered.
CHICK PROCUREMENT

chicks are young ones being hatched from eggs produced by mature birds this is the first step to take before venturing into the business. The birds need to be sourced from a reputable hatchery such hatchery must not be battling with a particular disease or an outbreak. There is always the need to book for birds while the hatchery gives an appropriate time for collection or delivery.
PEN PREPARATION

Before the arrival of the chicks, the brooding room (a place where chicks are cared for) must be kept in a place with the following materials in place

· Wood shavings: it protects the chicks from having contact with the cemented floor and ensure warmth for the chicks

· Thermometer: it helps monitor the temperature of the brooding room

· feeders and drinkers: feeds are placed in the feeders while water is placed in the drinkers

· Disinfectant: it’s a chemical substance placed at the foot dip to ensure biosecurity.

However before the arrival of the chicks, all these aforementioned materials should be well placed. the brooding room must be made warm before their arrival.
Chicks care

In the first few weeks of life, broilers are given adequate care and attention to prevent chick mortality (this process is called brooding) brooder pen is made warm using the heater prior the arrival of chicks. while the temperature is monitored using the thermometer behavioral pattern can be used to determine heat intensity in cases where thermometer is not available the chicks move closer to the source of heat when the heat is not enough, they also move away from the heat towards the wall when the heat is too much. but when the heat is normal, The spread evenly in the pen this shows that the chicks are comfortable in the brooder house.
feeding

Chicks are given prestarter for the first few days, after which they are fed broiler starter for the remaining first four weeks and transitioned to broiler finisher till slaughter. broiler starter are finer in texture while broiler finisher are coarse with larger feed particle size. feed are made available throughout the day when farmer intends AD-LIB feeding feed and clean water must be available for chicks however they consumes 2 kg of feed at the first 4 weeks
Medication and vaccination

This aspect for a novice, i will advice the farmer to consult a qualified veterinary doctor to carry out medication and vaccination process from which the farmer can also learn. however, a few tips will be dropped here as regard this.

Do not vaccinate sick birds
use multivitamin after each vaccination procedure
Ensure your vaccine is not expired
Ensure proper disposal of left over vaccines and vials to prevent consequent outbreak
Make sure the temperature of the vaccine is not altered before administration to avoid reconstitution of vaccine which can eventually make the birds come down with the disease you are actually preventing.

Slaughtering procedure

At six weeks , broilers are ready to be slaughtered. at this point, a particular clean room is required to prevent contamination of meat produce. the birds are suspended using rope while the head is removed and the blood drained the birds are then packed into hot water to enhance de feathering. The carcass is placed on the table while the vent is opened with a very sharp knife and visceral are removed.

This category is equally important broilers can be sold by the farmer to individual consumers or to middle men. At the moment broilers are sold for 2000 naira per kg in Nigeria the sales however depends on location of market
