When evidence was released that they were infact running the bio labs, they said, ok, we were actually doing "research" for defensive purpose only.
When they were confronted with the sort of deadly pathogens they were "researching"
"The level-3 biosafety lab will be used to study anthrax, tularemia, and Q fever as well as other dangerous pathogens." ...then they turned and accused Russia of planning to release it on Ukrainians.

Some of US are not stupid.

Imagine a pathogen with kill rate of 50%?
