Hello everyone
Please I need help of married people with children or any knowledgeable individual to help me manage the money me and my husband make so we can spend less.

We have a family of two kids, the first one is 6 and the second one is four.

We usually spend a total of 60,000 Naira monthly on feeding every month.

We live in Abuja and I need help on how to reduce our total feeding money from 60k to 40k or less. Are there any cheaper alternatives to staple foods like rice, yam, meat, fish etc?

The kids need to eat well to grow healthy so I can't compromise on their feeding. I buy food from outskirts of Abuja because things in the main Abuja markets are more costly.

I need helpful suggestions to help us spend less on feeding thank you.

If you already buy in bulk, there is little you can do to reduce the budget, except there are non-essentials you can cut out

Those people who are living in Abuja can only help you, you can't compare cost of things in Abuja and Lagos. Also it's depends on where your wife buy things, buying in bulk inside popular market is better than going to the supermarket.

I never buy in supermarket
I even go to cheaper village markets to save costs but hubby says 60k is too much for feeding monthly for four of us.

I think you should give the children all the need to eat and grow healthy

Then you and your husband can manage yourself like skipping lunch and whatever you can do to manage yourself

But if the economy on your side is nit yet stable and you birth another child, that 60k will be bearly enough to carry you guys

The best solution is to increase your earnings. Your husband is complaining that 60K is too much for feeding, so how much isn't "too much"? 25K? What about the children's nutritional wants? Does he know the consequences in having malnourished children especially at the ages you mentioned? The consequences could have your children become part of the Ndi alfa meils who sprout innuendos from their yansh during conversations.

Another solution is to cut down on non-essential expenses, that's, unnecessary clothes, outings, burial attendance, aso ebi, trek more instead of using taxis or Keke etc.

Yet another solution is for your husband to undergo vasectomy and this is because if with two children, he is complaining, I shudder at what he'd do should another child come in. shocked

Hubby doesn't want to deprive himself, I am the one bearing burden of the management. I didn't even want to mention that part, for example he must always eat goat meat and Plantain when eating rice, he does not like garri swallow. Only Semo and pounded yam. Infact let me not go there.

My thoughts:

- buy in bulk (gives you better bargaining, also inflation means the cost of food is increasing in almost weekly basis)
- discourage bing eating in the house. People should only eat when hungry
- no side courses at meals again...only main course smiley
- as parents , take a big leap and move from 1-1-1 to 1-0-1 (potential 33% saving on your feeding cost for you 2).

Go and get your pvc. If you were among those saying leader are equally bad, the suffering of buhari's regime should tell you that isnt true.

Thank you. I will suggest saving to buy in bulk to hubby.

OK good, he likes good things

If you can't manage the 60k, let him start running home with the 60k at least for 3 months so that he will have direct and first hand experience of what you have been cracking yourself with

May be he will increase the allowance

Have a weekly food time table for the kids going to school and for the 4 weekends in a month, it's normally stew and/or swallow.

An alternative for semovita is buying cassava and maize per mudu or paint bucket from local market and grind at a mill.

Make stew at weekends

I did exactly what you wrote above when he complained we are spending too much.
I suggested he should go to market once or twice and see prices of food items for himself and check for any other cheaper alternatives he wants us to start buying to save money. He didn't even respond. I think I will suggest it again.

In that case you have tried all means to let him know that, it's not working out

He knows that if he goes to market, he will be spending more

I think he wants you to be extremely economical in spending

Well you have to start with reducing his goat meat and yam, these two food items are extremely expensive in the market, for they are foods for the rich especially goat meat

I hope you eat well too. You should strive to also get an income if you don’t have one already or put heads together and increase your income but make sure to eat well

I don't eat well but let's leave that side alone.
I am searching for freelancing jobs I can do on the internet/during the weekends for extra income.

With the high cost of things in the market, 60k is not too much for feeding for family of four for a month.

I know all fingers are not equal, but madam, to be very honest with you, even if you buy from your village you'll not spend anything less.

If a family of four can feed on 60k, then I must salute your managerial skills.

Things are expensive everywhere, it's the plain truth.

I think with 60k feeding for four in this country where everything is costly, you are already cutting costs.

I know there are other things to do with money sha. But I can tell u, nothing spends money like feeding! You can't fight with ginger can you?

All you need to do is make sure you avoid buying one- one. Always buy in bulk.

You are trying madam

60k is good for a family of 4. Except you have a garden and can plant your vegetables and fruits. So it will remain to buy the staples (bread, yam etc)

At this point, there is nothing you can do
Anytime there is no food to serve at home, just look for something to feed your children that's all
By the time he comes back and meet no food he will understand your demands

I don't know how to say this but depriving yourself of food while the person complaining about budgeting the most eats satisfactorily, doesn't make sense. If you are starving yourself of food you may not even think well. Please eat and when the person who eats the most comes around budgeting , you both can now find a head way.

If you can't find freelance jobs, maybe you should start small scale hand jobs like sewing, parfait and anything that necessarily gives you financial freedom. I wish I know some freelance gig that could help but I don't for now. But eat, your family and children need you. I mean, whether you eat or not, the food expenditure is still going to be 60,000 regardless.
