Should Christians Take Antidepressants? Thoughts on the Pain of Depression and the Soul of Christianity
Feb 18, 2014
By: A. A. Howsepian

"[Depression] is a positive and active anguish, a sort of psychical neuralgia wholly unknown to normal life." —William James, Varieties of Religious Experience1

Should Christians take antidepressants? Or is there spiritual benefit in suffering through depressed moods? Are antidepressants overprescribed? Are they more harmful than helpful? How should Christians think about antidepressant therapy? How thoughtful Christians ought to think about treatment with antidepressant medications is, I shall suggest, tightly linked to how thoughtful Christians ought to think about human bodies and about pain.

No amount of medication can substitute the place of prayer. It is a fact and I have seen it with my own eyes that those who combined prayer with medication came out of depression but those who solely relied on medicine either ended up back in rehab or worse off

You are right, just like people with HIV have to combine their drugs with prayer otherwise they perish like those fools who only depend on drugs. You know what the really wise people do? They don't take any drugs because Jesus promised that with faith we can move any mountain tongue

Dealing with depression, the biopsychosocial model of treatment is the best approach. While taking the medication prescribed (bio), the patient also needs talk therapy (psycho) to help exhale and the social component of it is where the family, friends, the Church comes in, to offer support as the person goes through that dark journey.

There's no evidence that prayers has ever worked.
There are myriads of evidence that drugs work

Drugs don't kill depression cos they ll only work for some time before the memory, trauma, thoughts, feelings re-occur. Logically, counselling, meditating on God's words (reading Bible), praying, going to church to worship, meet people, make friends & not being alone kills depression.
So if anyone want to be out of depression, spiri-logical means are the best options. Not drugs, alcohol or any anti depressants.

Story. There are more people getting better from Drugs than there will ever be with prayers. Drug is replicable and more consistent. And that's a fact you can take to the bank any day.

Even your pastors sneak abroad for medical checkup and doctors appointment.

Drug does not cure everything. No one in his right senses will ever claim that. We are not Christians that lie to themselves that prayer solves everything. We recognize that drug has its limit and that's why we encourage research into more potent drugs.

That said, drugs are 5000 times more useful and productive than prayers. Prayer is the same as rolling a dice. Lol.

Those who don't pray are are worse off than those who do...it's a fact and I've seen it personally in the hospital that I work in . grin

Come to think of it, have you even been to the ICU in a hospital ? If you haven't, try visiting . You'll see the look of confusion in the eyes of those who don't pray... or believe in God . Most times they're often full of hatred and bitterness because they are lost and without hope. To them , nothing makes sense , not even their own existence .

But to those who pray and believe in God(aka Jesus) ...it's a completely different story that words can't describe. They have peace , even though they are dying...and that alone signifies something greater than science . It is something that you can never, ever understand. Infact, try visiting a hospital and see this...you'll be shocked!grin

Lies. You went across the hospital and took a census of those who pray and those who don't? Stop lying na. I know you are a Christian and lying is compulsive for you but resist the urge to do so on this thread.

A better measure for the results gotten by prayer and otherwise will be to compare countries that are non religious to religious ones and then decide. Even in the religious ones doing well, none of their achievements can be attributed to prayers but by all the non-religious efforts put in. If prayers worked those praying people shouldn't be in the hospital in the first place. LMAO

Hear rubbish talk, you think God that created plants and herbs for medicine is foolish.
That's how people die/suffer for no reason at all.
Imagine this person na pastor of a ministry.
I thank God that you acknowledge that God created those things to help and heal people , but it is on record that some ailments are beyond herbs and that's where prayer comes in tongue

Nonsense. I should start visiting random hospitals because I can access every ward and take a census right? Even if you work in a hospital you don't exactly have access to all parts of it and all the patients inside it. Stop lying. Mr Prayer Census.
