Oh... I see. Definitely a nice album but, in my opinion, it is not the best from her if I'm to judge by her standards. I think she sounds much better when she sings in her local language or even French. Apart from Flying High, other tracks are mostly in English and that didn't cut it for me.

Also, I really don't think she has a very wide range (I'd give that to the likes of Onyeka Onwuenu). Angelique's voice is almost consistently between tenor and baritone (A3?). I think what's mind-blowing about her voice is rather her tone. Her voice is like the sound of liquid gold flowing through a glass tunnel. Where I live, my friends call her wombolombo. Asides her French tracks, they don't understand most of the things she says, but they still love her nevertheless.

She's really awesome.

Hhmm... I actually saw this earlier. Since it's the album getting the award, this could also mean the artistic achievement of the album, its technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to the album's sales, chart position, or critical reception.

Album of the year is not usually given to a single person. According to the same Wikipedia, it is awarded for a whole album and presented to the artist, featured artist, songwriter, producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer with significant contributions to that album. So if it's really about musical achievement, whose musical achievement would be considered? Just the singer?

Again, she deliberated delayed her album because she wanted Burna to win. If you listened to "Twice as Tall" track, you'd hear Burna rant about his Grammy sojourn and how it messed him up.

Angelique is a force of nature. Her coverage both in terms of time and space is wider than that of Wizkid. So even when Wizkid's album is better, her larger audience would always be in her favour. I knew she was threat but really hoped Wizkid would bring this one home to earn me some bragging rights.

I don't really think it's just about the message. Or are you saying Wizkid passed more message than every other artist that was not nominated? In fact, taking a look at the past winners, I'm almost certain message alone doesn't cut it.

I think the submissions are based on virtually every aspect of music including production, instruments, lyrics, etc. Note that good lyrics might still not pass so much message in the traditional sense of it. A good example of such would be R. Kelly's songs.

I mentioned audience in my comment because the business side of Grammy demands that they present known albums in order not to lose people's interest. A great album that didn't go beyond the streets of Lagos would never get to Grammy even if the artist is a messanger of the gods. That's the power of audience, bro.
