ASUU, NASU, SSANU Are Wicked - Education Minister by NollyMedia(f): 2:02pm On Apr 05, 2022
Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education, has described the striking university staff including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions as wicked and mean.

VANTAGE NEWS reports that the university groups are currently on strike over the inability of the government to fulfill promises made to them.

Speaking in an interview with The Punch, Nwajiuba said it’s wickedness for the groups to embark on strike over issues the government would still solve in the nearest future.

Nwajiuba said, “We are negotiating with the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and the same thing ASUU is asking for is the same thing they are asking for but they are willing to continue working.

“The only place we have a suspension of work is the ASUU, SSANU and NASU on account of things they believe are owed them. We believe every union is entitled to make these requests. The government has agreed with them. Government is only releasing money as they have it.

“The renegotiation committee has always been constituted; the only departure is in the willingness of ASUU, SSANU and NASU to continue working while the same entitlements are on.

“The others have same demands but are willing to continue working while they get their entitlements. We have consistently said if you disrupt academic programmes because of one entitlement you are supposed to get, you will eventually get the entitlement but our children would have lost the time they are supposed to learn, you are just being mean. There is no point disrupting everybody’s life, those people can’t regain their lives but you can regain yours, because you haven’t gotten it everybody else must lose something.

“The strike has not produced the money they are asking for, if the money was there they would have been paid the day they started the strike.

“Government has heard them, they are not wrong but the same way government has said they will get the money, for every strike they have embarked on they still get their money but human beings have lost times.

“They are not only being wicked to the government but they are wicked to the human beings that constitute Nigeria.”

This present government is out to destroy western education in Nigeria. Buhari, just intentionally planted his men and used Ngige as their tactical adviser.

Until 2023, university education will know no peace.

FG is extremely KIND for not honoring agreement, playing hide and seek, claiming there is no money even with the obviously over-bloated cost of governance, reckless looting, endless borrowing, and splurging money on health tourism!

OK...let's agree that ASUU members are wicked for going on strike at the detriment of students, but the federal government should clear their doubts this time around by meeting their demands within the agreed six weeks.
How do you convince the lecturers to go back to class after failing severally to honor similar agreements. Once bitten, twice shy!

The money is not there to pay them but you borrowed billions of dollars just to construct railway to republic of Niger, a country suffering from abject poverty. You also donate a billion dollar to Afanganista, please who is deceiving who?

The problem is on the students.

Covid 19 took one year and now it's strike.

People Who started a four years course in 2017 are still in school because of these things.

I praise those who are already graduates.

Now it's hot cake to graduate.

It is reminiscent of the 80s and 90s during the military era when to graduate was very hard due to so many factors.

I still remember how people used to spend years in the universities and polytechnics.

That's what I was told sha.

Except you're also wicked, why would you agree that ASUU is wicked. I'm a student too and truth be told, if ASUU fold their hands, they're the one's we'd criticise for spoiling Nigeria's education system and not the politicians.

How much is ASUU asking for from a nation that is building over $4 billion free railway to Niger? And you say ASUU is wicked?

They promised to give people jobs, the only thing they came up with is 30k Npower and yet, they still owe them the chicken change. Borrowing funds to build infrastructure that is doomed to be bombed by those they failed to educate, is that not wickedness?

Look at Nigeria 10 years ago, look at it now and tell me whether ASUU is responsible for the decay.

Maybe I don't know the meaning of wickedness Sha.

My grouse with ASUU is that after years of criticizing successive governments, once they have a chance at governance, they fail woefully to correct the bad system they criticised while in ASUU. From the vice chancellors to the ministers of education etc and even the current vice president were all ASUU members!

The above statement points to the fact that the whole patriotic struggles -- like they put it, is all about their selfish ends while making it appear like it's about the interests of students and their parents. That's why I have my reservations about the whole matter.

Look at people like Adamu Adamu whom I understand is an Accountant and also has a masters degree and must have had a feel of the rots in the system, Vice President Osinbajo was also a lecturer and a professor at that. Even Ngige is a medical doctor and SHOULD KNOW (I believe anybody with an honest PhD or professional qualification is knowledgeable enough and should understand the rot in our universities). How about other political appointees of this government like the SGF ( a professor and once ASUU member), NUC ES (professor and ASUU member), JAMB registrar ( professor and ASUU member) etc

Why can't all these people make a case at the level of government for a better university system? Why can't ASUU create that fraternal bond with her members in government that would better the ugly situation of our universities (NMA comes to mind)? Their failure to do that gives me the impression that their so called patriotic struggle is nothing but some self centered agenda for those of them at the top echelon to satisfy their selfish interests at the expense of students.

There is nothing like fake news in that only for wrong quotation. Whether 1million dollars or 1 billion dollars, ASUU need that money more than the unnecessary donation to Afghanistan.
