Legislators in the National Assembly’s upper chambers have approved a bill that would establish a Federal University of Medical Sciences and Biomedical Technology that would be spread across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The bill was passed during plenary on Tuesday, April 5, after the House of Representatives considered a report by the Committee on Health and Human Services (Secondary and Tertiary).

As he stated in his presentation, Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe (Kwara Central) said the establishment of a University in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones would address the shortage of students seeking to study Medicine and Allied Sciences in the country.

During his explanation of the institutions, Senator Oloriegbe stated that when they are fully operational, they will provide the necessary manpower in the healthcare sector, medical research, and pharmaceutical product manufacturing in the country. He went on to say that the institutions would also help to create jobs.

The bill to establish the Federal University of Medical Sciences and Biomedical Technology was passed by the House of Representatives following a clause-by-clause examination of the report on the bill by the Committee of the Whole.
